To myself, the comments made by Cockayne are the opinions of a man who, like an increasing number of residents of our fair isle, have been seized upon by the right wing politicians and fed rhetoric about how our once great nation is under threat from an islamist/fundamentalist ideal. He certainly isn't the 1st person to believe it. He is obviously a bit dim, but is it really cause for such a grave outpouring wishing ill upon his person? The phrases and beliefs he stated are uttered on a daily basis by many, many people in various places, yet the police don't go chasing after them all.

As for the question of being a role model, i wouldn't have thought that Cockayne would be the obvious choice among the younger element of the Rovers support. To me it's part of a parent's responsibility to establish a boundary if they take their children to watch sport on a regular basis to ensure if their children are inspired by a player such as Cockayne, it should only be for on-pitch endeavours. Although let's face it, there's a distinct possibility that some parents may share the same views as Cockayne does.

As poorly informed and slightly ignorant his opinion may be, i think to take away his livelihood is stretching it a bit too far.

Yet your fans all sing his name in a hero worship sort of way? They even did it today "Charlie Charlie" so why wouldn't the younger more impressionable Rovers fans look upto him?

I think only incredibly stupid people would take a comment from one person within that organisation to go on to presume that the whole organisation was racist and didn't welcome anybody but white people. But if the organisation wants to put out a statement that's fair enough, i have no problem at all with them doing it.

any parent that lets their kids life choices be dictaed by a pampered overpaid sportsman/ woman is a very poor parent indeed! I have yet to hear anybody suggest that idolising a sportsman as a kid led them to bad life choices as an adult, could be a good excuse in court!

No, but its clear people want him punished for EVERY on filed action BECAUSE of his off field actions. He is a hated figure because of things he has done off the pitch, we rarely see a post saying 'xxxxxxx should of walked for his challenge on Cockayne'. If he is sacked for his comments on facebook, so be it, but lets have a little equality with regards to on field issues.

Another thing. We as the sport-loving nation we purport to be are always complaining about sports stars being "out of touch" with the public, yet the views held by Cockayne could well be shared by many a Rugby League fan. It's something that's happening here and now in our country, a result of the politics of fear that's been established by the hard right. I work with people who share similar beliefs, but i'd never consider reporting them to the police or asking them to give up doing what keeps a roof over their head.

Imagine the amount of new prisons we'd need to build if everyone who got a racist text joke shopped the sender. No matter what is believed by some on here, racist humour is prevalent in our society. What Cockayne posted was awful and stupid and if everyone on here who wants him sacked, jailed or banned for life will from now on shops everyone who sends them a joke about race, religion or sexuality, we will soon be living in the Utopian world some on here believe exists now.

With respect, what he posted - one comment that we are aware of and a profile Religion/Political view - were not "jokes".

Just to remind you, he refered to an Asian taxi driver as a "P*** c***", states his political view as "block up the f****** Channel Tunnel" and his religious views as "hang/burn the extremists and off with there[sic] stinking ugly heads".

Ironic as his own views are, of course, extremist.

But surely some of the offensive stuff sent by text is equally offensive, he is a complete idiot for HAVING such views and an even bigger one for posting them on a social networking site, but he is no more a racist than the moron who sends you jokes with racial overtones.

Anyway, there are lots of people who would block up the tunnel that are not racist and while his langauge with regards to extremists shows his own extremisms and his lack of education are you saying we should embrace extremists who would gladly blow us to kingdom come
