| Being at the Cardiff and Wembley double headers, I must say that I was a little surprised and certainly pleased that just about everybody stayed on for the 2nd matches.
At Wembley, just about everybody who had been at there for the England v New Zealand match stayed on through the half hour gap and were there for the Australia v Fiji match when it kicked off.
What did happen was that the crowd really started to thin out from about half way through the 2nd half of the Australia v Fiji match. By that time, the result was clear AND, importantly, it was ABSOLUTELY FREEZING. So the fact that people started leaving didn't surprise me at the time. Personally, I stayed right to the end - but that meant I'd been in my seat for about 5 hours in what became an icy cold stadium.

And you think that's a bad thing? No wonder London paid no attention to you.

No they wouldn't. Because that was the attendance. If it wasn't then please provide some match report that says otherwise.

A, 460/26......the way I would think is right.
B, 570/28.....not one I would particularly go for as it doesn't give a true indicator of how many stayed but those people bought tickets for TWO games so whether or not they stayed in their seats they did buy a ticket that included Australia vs Fiji so can be counted as such in ticket sales for that match too.
C, 460/28.....the option only a stupid or desperate person would take.
To claim 67,545 just once is wrong. If that many people watched Eng/NZ then what you're claiming is that zero people watched the 2nd match. And whilst some did leave it was still a clear 5 figure crowd for Aus/Fiji. So even going on a number as conservatively low as 15,000 for the second game, you'd have to add that to the 67,545 for England/NZ and the number of people who WATCHED both semi finals games would be over 80,000 at least. However it's impossible (despite William's lame a$$ attempts with pictures) to prove exactly how many people watched each game, especially as the crowd decreased as the 2nd contest became more of a hammering, do we only count people who stayed for at least 48 minutes? Or 60? Or only those who stay until the final hooter goes? That why I say the 460/26 is the correct call.
And yes regarding the pictures, loving how he waited until the end of a one sided battering after a devastating lost for the home team previously to show us the "true" figure. Also how he sat through a tv replay of the match and couldn't bring himself to pause it in the 42nd minute or the 45th minute as they must not have been empty looking enough lol. If for arguments sake all 67,000+ stayed for the 2nd game up until halftime but then the majority left leaving only 10,000/15,000 does this mean that 67,000+ didn't watch the match because they only saw 40 minutes of it?
A Liverpool fan once left the 2005 Champions League final at halftime when they were 3-0 down, does this mean he never attended the final because he didn't stick around? If you buy a meal but don't finish it does this mean you never bought it? If you go to the cinema but leave before the end does this mean you never bought a ticket? If people bought a ticket for 2 semi finals but didn't watch all/any of the 2nd game does this not mean they bought a ticket to watch both games?

Alas, it is also the option that most mathematicians would take to discover the average attendance at championship....the number of actual attendees divided by the actual number of games.

| To be fair, most mathematicians will choose from a wide range of statistical techniques and would select either the most appropriate one, or the one that best supports their arguement.

...yep.
Best way to describe this RLWC is a damn sight better than then poor effort in 2000 and a good step forward from the 2008 one.....increases across the board and a decent amount of awareness raised in the UK media.
No doubt the SL naming sponsor will have come on board as a direct result of the good vibe from the RLWC.

If you think any mathematician or statistician would divide a double header by two to get an average attendance, you are either talking to complete idiots or are making it up.
"The number of actual attendees" is where you're tripping up. It doesn't matter. Completely irrelevant.
"The number in attendance at EACH game" divide by "the number of games" gives you an "average attendance". It doesn't change for a DH.
The figure you're giving is just a halving of an attendance for what appears to be no reason.
Either back it up by finding where a mathematician or statistician would half a double header (in which case it would still be wrong but at least it'd explain where you got the notion from!), or admit you just got it wrong and made it up.

| unfortunately double headed games fit no rules, if the price had been set at the same as a single game then you could say they were only getting half the revenue than 2 separate games would generate. The prices for the double headers were a lot higher than other group games. would 45k watch Eng v Aus for £5....maybe, would 45k watch Wales v Italy for £5...no way.....but 45k did watch boths game for about £10......so that means that 45k paid £5 twice....so in theory the equivalent of 90k attended if the price was adjusted to a single group game price.......

| Having read through the arguments for the validity of both methods to calculate the averages for the World Cup, I would say that there is no ‘right’ way of doing it as both methods could be argued as being correct
So, as a Rugby League fan (as we all are on this site), I am going to go with the one that paints our game and our hugely successful World Cup in the best possible light…. i.e. the higher one!

| I've previously tried to use the Magic Weekend as an example of why treating the double headers as one event rather than 2 games is the best way to calculate an average. Tickets are available for Saturday and Sunday, so those 2 attendances are given (this way does count people who have bought the weekend ticket twice, but as they are avaialble as separate tickets I think this is fair enough). If you were to take the 550,000 figure that would be like saying that the total attendance of the MW was 180,000, when in reality the figure given is 60,000.
Another way of looking at it, say there were 18,000 at the Froch v Groves fight the other week, does that mean that the attendance of all the undercard fights is taken and the total attendance was over 100,000? - No, of course it doesn't. This is the same, you can't take the number of games within the average as this either means doubling the actual number of fans in attendance at the DHs, which adds about 3,000 to the tournament average, or you half the total which knocks about 3k off it.
I know this thread is tedious and in reality it really doesn't matter. But people are using statistics to either over or underwhelm the true figure. I don't care what other sports do, there was not 45,000 at England v Australia and 45,000 at Wales v Italy, nor were there 22,500 at each game, there were 45,000 in attendance for 2 games as part of the same event.
