| Quote: vastman "[i]Possibly the worst decision ever recorded[/i was when Colin Winfied ?? awarded Bradford’s winger a try. This was pre SL 1990s so no 4th official or VR but when photos were printed next day and it may also have been on Scrumdown he’d grounded it 3 feet short - yes 3 feet!
Not sure how crucial a score it was but the ref was unfit and unable to keep up with play whilst the linesman was clearly blind!!!!
This was ore Bulls so Bradford were a nowt team at the time for printers benefit. Just pure technical incompetence.'" ]
I think you're forgetting a decision in the 1968 Challenge Cup Final.

| Mine are both Ian Smith in Saints derbies at the JJB
2004 - we knock on whilst attacking the line. Lockers inexplicably opts to pat the ball upwards into Ade Gardners' hands rather than diving on it. Ian Smith is too quick to the whistle and blows a knock on as Gardener is going the full length. There is probably worse than that, but you don't tend to remember the ones that go your way.
2005 - Terry Newton knocks out Lee Gilmour and breaks Sean Long's jaw but stays on the field. Meanwhile, they get two sin bins for minor infringements. Saints, minus Long, became the first side to finish top of the league and not make the final, losing to both grand finalists by 3 and 5 points in the play offs with a 17 year old Moore, then a 19 year old out of position Roby deputising at scrum half. I think Newton cost them both the final and the trophy to be honest, when really he should have been sent off well before he got to Long.

| Quote: Pumpetypump "As a Bradford fan who was at the game I was going to post exactly this incident. It was utterly bizarre. As you say Neil Summers was literally nowhere near the try line.
Whitfield was having a funny old game though and by the time Bradford were given a penalty try the wakey fans were going a bit mental. In fact the decisions had so flustered one woman that she turned to me and started to slap at my shoulders (seriously weird). I was only 14 and it was the first away game I'd been to with just mates so it sticks in my memory for Whitfield and the unusual fan.'"
I was going to mention that too! Early 90s for Bradford Northern. Neil Summers (our stand off that day Vastman) seemed to drop the ball about 3m from the line yet the try was given. Completely bizarre.
Whitfield was capable of some bizarre reffing at times.

There was nothing wrong with it.

| Russell Smith has still never been forgiven by wire fans for giving wigan an imaginary penalty on the hooter in the early 90s. Scores were tied at 6-6 and that point would've seen wire crowned champions that season. No wonder the little git went scurrying off to Australia.

1989 title decider at Naughton Park.
Wigan looked the better side all first half, a couple of minutes before half time we throw the ball around, Mike O'Neill makes a half break for us and in contact just throws the ball forward. Darren Wright kicked it ahead and Offiah pounced for a try. Holdsworth must have decided Wigan had won enough, and to let somebody else win something so totally ignored it.
It got us back in the game only trailing 10-12 at ht. We scored first second half and went on to be crowned champs.
As an aside, in the same game I saw the greatest try I've ever seen live, Offiah's hat trick try where he left Mark Preston for dead and rounded Hampson in the corner. A bit better than how we've done this year.
Not sure if we are allowed to post youtube links but you can see the Mike O'Neill touchdown pass here, around the 12 minute mark.

Our most infamous one of recent times had to be the Jordan Tansey ‘try’ at Magic Weekend 2007 vs Bradford when he followed up Sinfield’s penalty that hit the crossbar even though he was offside by at least 4 or 5mm
I have little memory but am sure it was more than a quarter of an inch.

| HKR v Queensland 1983. Queensland were playing dirty all first half so after being tackled, Mark Broadhurst stood up and just floored the player at marker. Robin Whitfiield just gave a penalty and the Queensland player had to be helped off iirc. Hull KR went on to inflict Queensland's only defeat of their tour. The hit in today's game would result in a minimum 5 game ban.

On a side note, I was taught by his Mrs and met him a few times as he used to come in and do some PE type after school activities. What a thoroughly nice couple they were. She was a fantastic teacher and he was a really nice bloke too - loved to talk rugby.

I liked the way Whitfield gestures to the player to get up when he’s clearly been knocked out

The chip seems to belong to the 3 posters who have taken objection to my post. I didn’t mentioned any one club by name as a smaller club yet the 3 aforementioned posters who felt the need to retort just so happen to support the same club.

Huddersfield Giants - "We know our place": |

I wasn't there - twenty odd years before I was born, but my Grandad went to the 1953 Challenge Cup Final and he always swore blind that Peter Ramsden's first try was a double movement. He still won the Lance Todd though!
Here's the try - about 25 seconds in. I think his momentum carries him over, but my Grandad didn't have the benefit of the big screen replay.

I think it helped he was something like NZ heavyweight boxing champ. He was also involved in a massive punch up in Aus with a Jets player.
It does remind me of a GB v Aus game where Rod Reddy bites Jim Mills in the tackle. Mills get up, nuts Reddy & snots him on the way down. Penalty to GB, get on with it. No Aussie dare come near to Mills.
