Quote: Grimmy "IMO the fans and our commentators generally don't want to learn the nuances of the rules. They would rather be outraged when they perceive a decision to be wrong, so there's little point in having Cummins there. It just places even more focus on the referees rather than the players. In the NRL games I've watched, they don't seem anywhere near as obsessed with the match officials, and I don't believe that is because theirs are any better than ours.

Agreed with regard to Baz and Tez's big hits. It is seriously cringeworthy, especially with Eddie making the same point every game that they only tend to include ones which are foul play. I don't have an answer as to how they should implement an overhaul, but they definitely need to.'"

Agree 100%. When the World Cup was on I remember watching games with Vossy and Brian Noble commentating, and they just loved the game and got really excited over the bits of skill and the hits. It was so refreshing.

Over analysing the refereing decisions makes the game so depressing.

Absolutely - even if Cummings was any good, having any ex-referee on to discuss decisions throughout the game is just putting emphasis on the refereeing rather than the game itself. The fact he's useless and appears to have the same level of knowledge as any normal RL fan makes it even worse. There is just no need for it whatsoever - get a commentator in who knows and understands the game and you simply don't need him or Barrie and Tez.

1 excellent game caller, and 1 ex-player/coach is all that is needed - the rest could be used for pre/post game, or programmes like boots n all, but not during the match. We should just be hearing the action and building the spectacle.

If they insist on having Cummings there, then they should use him more like BT Sports do on their football coverage with Howard Webb....sparingly. In fact on occasions, the commentators tell you what Webb has said, without the need to hear his voice all the time.

I also wouldn't mind seeing him occasionally doing a pre-match piece discussing a rule that is causing controversy for example. This week, for instance, he could do a pre-match chat with Carney about the RFL's clamp down on milking penalties, and the impact of this may have on referees and the way they may now view the ruck.

What we currently have adds nothing of any value at all. If anything it impacts negatively on the experience.

Bill Harrigan commentates on the radio here sometimes, and his insight can be interesting, mainly because he doesn't mind saying when a ref gets it wrong.

Over-analysing things is hugely irritating - especially commentators like Phil Gould who focus on negatives too much. Sometimes you feel as though his job is to make the entire TV audience switch off.

Couldn't agree more - another example of the tendency to see the NRL as the land of milk and honey; in some NRL match commentaries, a referee decision that the commentators don't agree with, can dominate the whole proceedings - Gould being the worst offender, egged on by Ray Warren.

Noble and Jiffy are the best by a huge margin. Honestly and tactical understanding. Not to mention they have good banter and are funny.

even if JD cannot say "Leuluai" even remotely correct. LOOO-LIE is used in its absence.

Davies is the most miserable, downbeat, hyper-critical RL commentator I've ever heard; his nasal whining ruins my enjoyment of any game he's involved with, which are thankfully infrequent, although unfortunately, usually high profile.

Agreed

There is no denying his ability as a player but, in the commentary box, he's bloody annoying.
Everything is "simple" "bang".
Noble is excellent though.

Davies is really awful, the poster above summed him up well.great RL player no doubt but should stick to talking Union now.Noble has always been decent.

I actually liked rod studd's commentary and don't mind Bill Arthur. I know Studd commentates on the darts, but i would have him co commentate with both Eddie and Bill, and get rid of Cummins with his useless imput.

I could support that. Just so long as they act decisively and get O'Connor off match commentary without delay (not leave it until next year).

As a matter of fact,SKY-SPORT'S has had to bring it's belt in a notch or two. Since we said good-bye to Stevo, it was a matter of tinkering with what we have got ,rather than bring in a, all singing, dancing team of expert's........Brian Carney is doing a great job fronting the show. so you have got what you have got!

I like Carney as a pre/post game presenter, and I like Wells for the technical sections.

I could cope with Rodd Studd as the main commentator if he didn't go off on one with silly ideas of thoughts so often.
