| Quote: pyeman "What the player says to him shouldnt bring any doubt into his mind, otherwise every player would ask for the video ref every time and get it.
refs make snaps calls every game all the time, its what they are paid to do, they are not paid to make a call then change there mind at a players request.
As i have said when was the last time a ref changed his mind after a plea from a quins or wakey player?'"
So if there's a messy grounding and several defenders are suddenly calling for a knock-on, the referee should ignore it because it looked ok from where was stood? Rubbish. He could easily miss a small knock-on and should make sure.
You're not getting it. Player's don't make the decisions, but if a referee feels that perhaps an appeal has validity and he may have missed something, he's perfectly correct to go to the VR, or perhaps his touch-judges.
Players appeal all the time - Wellens is known for it, as are a few others. I would imagine most are ignored, but depending on the circumstances if there's an element of doubt the referee is correct to check.
You prefer incorrect decisions as long as the referee stamps his authority on the game. I prefer the correct decision to be reached, because the referee has absolute authority anyway.

Either all appeals should result in the ref going to the vr or none, picking and choosing is unacceptable.

Referees look to their TJs when deciding to award any try.
You may think that the referee has not had a good enough view of it, but the TJ may have had a better vantage. If you see a TJ stand on the corner of the touch in-goal/dead ball line then that indicates that they have seen the ball be grounded correctly. Most fans don't realise this. Also at most SL games there are also IG judges who stand up straight when a ball has been grounded correctly.

Rubbish. Referees are generally switched on enough to decide between genuine appeals and chancers and each situation is judged individually.
If he's 100% confident in his decision then he goes with it. If he's not, and someone is making a genuine appeal for something he might have missed, he should check.

| Ganson wasn't great but he made bad decisions both ways and Wigan would have smashed Catalans whoever was ref.

Under your system the game can be changed based on how good a player is at pleading with the ref, which is just plain stupid.

I know all that perfectly well. But still things get missed (such as the offside on Sunday) and if the referee thinks he and his colleagues have missed something, he should check with the VR who probably has the best view.
If (and we don't actually know for sure) Pat Richards was saying "offside sir", and Ganson suddenly thinks "actually I'm not sure, I'd better check", then that's perfectly correct. If no-one is offside the try is given. If some is offside, the try is correctly disallowed. Correct outcome.
If Pat is shouting "knock-on", when it's obvious there was no knock-on, Ganson will ignore him. Common sense.

Right, 'cos that never happens.
Seriously, and no offence, but you seem to a bit naive.

Well we know it does, that why we are discussing it, i'm not arguing it doesn't happen, i'm arguing it shouldn't, its against the spirit of the game and can never be consistent there is nothing naive about wanting the sport to improve and better rules to be brought in.

It's not against the spirit at all. We're talking about a referee hearing a genuine appeal and thinking perhaps he has missed something, and then checking to make sure. It probably doesn't even happen all that often.
Telling referees to ignore all feedback from players and make decisions regardless is not improving the sport.
As was proven on Sunday, when the correct decision (as harsh as it was) was reached.

The only player speaking to the ref should be the captain and that should not be regarding individual calls.
How does the ref know if an appeal is genuine? he doesnt, so you have a situation where sometimes he goes to the video ref at the request of a player and sometimes he doesnt, that is clearly unacceptable, you could have game (and seasons) decided by which team begs the ref more (or better). That is clearly wrong, either all appeals should go to the video ref or none, the ruling must be objective not subjective or the call will be biased.
For instance if a ref knows a player well and he trust him he will listen to him, wheras players he doesnt know he wont and that clearly once again wrong, personalities of player cannot be allowed to affect the outcome of games.

| We'll just have to agree to disagree, enough going round in circles.
I think a good ref will know when an appeal may indicate he has missed something. I also think if that is the case he is correct to refer the matter to the VR.
You don't.

Fair enough, enjoy the play offs mate.
