Quote: Dico "Quite possibly but that money's allowed clubs to do things that would never have been possible before.
If the sky money dried up RL would not die, the SL clubs wouldn't die.
I fail to see why everyone claims the reliance of pro clubs on sky money is such an issue, when pro clubs go bust, then we'll worry'"

Which is , apart from paying the players more money ?

I'm fairly certain that without Sky money, many SL clubs would have to go semi-pro (i'm assuming here that no other TV company would take up the contract). Like you say though, the game wouldn't die - it would just have to cut it's cloth accordingly.

Exactly rich, point I was making but WITH the money:
Well, I can only really consider my club.
We have actual youth structures in place now, youth development coaches, proper scholarships. I believe the links with the community and schools are much better although it's a few years since I was in school. The marketing of the club is superior and the general business side of the club is top notch imo for any occasion.
Warrington Wolves is genuinely a community club whereas, and I posted this on your board Starbug, older clubs like Leigh (same as Warrington seemed to me in the 90's), it's somewhere for the old boys to go on a sunday afternoon. Most of my mates who are now lifelong wire fans got involved through some marketing initiative and they will remain for years to come. If we had no money, like years ago we wouldn't be able to fund this and we'd still be playing in front of 3500 crowds. I remember going to the Cronulla, Penrith and Auckland games where 5000 was considered a great crowd! No wonder Sky lost a fortune, now we, and most clubs would fill the grounds. This is how far SL has grown imo.
You could consider it paying more money but the quality of personel we attract to the club is much higher as we can compete with the NRL for their players. These players bring fans through the gates

Because there isn't the money or players to go around...yet. And if another area can add specifically more then they get it. if Leigh want in they have to prove they're the best candidate at the lower level

Right, I'm genuinely curious as to where you've got this notion that all Leigh supporters are codgers? I hope that you will be pleasantly surprised when you come to the game on Sunday and see how many young kids in Leigh still support their club....not as many as we'd like, but it's far higher than when I went to primary school in the mid 90's and you could count the number of Leigh supporters on one hand.

[sizeAnd no, the answer isn't six![/size

Sustainable paying crowds. That'll put a club in SL.
A Championship club pulling in 6,000+ REGULARLY would almost certainly elevate them "upstairs". I know i've stated the obvious but there you go.

Leigh appear to be improving, let's hope you continue moving in that direction. Last year was a setback both on the field and the crowd average considering you're playing out of a great new stadium but there is still a place for Leigh in the grand scheme of things. Personally and i've been shot down before, you need to crack Bolton/areas to the north of Leigh. If you did you'd have your place.
The majority of your fans have got to get off that bitter high horse though, no really.

WOW..
You really ought to win an award.
It wouldn't even need to be anywhere near 6000, but why doesn't every other bugger realise this?

when you believe the game can grow stronger from the inside and then work outwards to other areas.then yes i do have a problem it.

Well you have a nice low salary cap, turn a profit, a shiny new stadium, some locals in your team, go ahead and grow.
Having had donkeys years to achieve it, I'm not expecting much.

we do have a low salary,no sky money you see.
turn a profit, unlikely, does any club make a profit worth having a tug over.
new stadium, very good point.
local players yes more than you'll ever have history tells you that.
yes as a club we are growing again even without the level of financial backing clubs warrington have had for donkeys years and still ucked it up.

It's certainly something that has been called for in recent years, and our community department actually do a certain amount of coaching in schools in Bolton, so hopefully it will pay off. That said, our plan to move to the Reebok if we'd have got promoted in to Super League in 2001 while Hilton Park was redeveloped was frowned upon hugely at the time, yet would get us a franchise point these days icon_wink.gif

Warrington will have a 13 with as many local players as Leeds or Saints within 5 years, I guarantee you.
You're growing but you're a bazillion miles off the Warrington standard as of yet. Don't forget we were only one of three clubs to get an A grade, definately not a F up.
I heard that Leigh turned a profit last year.

i hope your right on your youth policy.
when i think how far behind warrington we are i think of HKR and were they were a couple of years ago plus if your youth policy does'nt produce 6/7 quality kids year after year you've no chance of having consistant success.my feeling is the warrington area cant produce them kids.

ahh but the Leeds 'area' doesn't produce a lot of theirs.
We, like leeds in the recent past, have started taking kids from other areas and putting them through our academy.
Hull kr was a nice sucess story but are still way off the pace, lose a lot of money, haven't great facilities and produce next to no juniors as of yet. In a three year license system i'd like to see them reduce their debts and plan for the future without piling a shed load into the first team. Also see Huddersfield.
We don't have that sort of debt, now finally have decent youth structures and will bear that fruit I think within 5 years...if we don't, no biggie, we'll just do what everyone else does and buy some in for the meantime but we wont need to.
if I were you I'd go and have a chat to the Castleford board as that is a model you want to follow. Juniors, no real superstars, low budget (to an extent) and moderately successful on the field.
