| Quote: Eastbourne Warrior "Mike Ford anyone?
This Mike Ford thing seemed not to have any legs, but the Beeb are reporting it today: news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/8374328.stm - although they're clearly saying it's unlikely.
...but with his head being on the chopper for many in Onion looking for a scapegoat, it could be that its not up to him whether he goes to the RUWC and a return to RL could be a goer. I certainly can't see anybody wanting this guy back (I don't!) - with the greatest of respect for what he did during his playing days.
Ford himself makes one or two valid points in this article though; 'How many games are they going to play this year and the year after?,' and 'is there enough work for somebody full-time?' Both questions any coach worth his salt is going to ask. Problem is, have the RFL got the answers - and if not, how many top level coaches will that rule out?
Sadly, IMO when the only names so far quizzed about the role (aside from Kear - who I'd have in a shot) are Steve Mac & Mike bloody Ford, its a sad indictment of the coaching situation in the UK.

The same Mike Ford who, along with his son, didn't go to union for the money
How do you know those are the only people being considered?

The points mike ford raises about lack of fixtures show to me exactly why the job will always be unattractive as a full time position. A lot of the problems of having a part time coach seem to stem from the bias they show when selecting players from their clubs i.e. bridge, myler, harrison from tony smiths wolves, iestyn harris when noble was coach etc.
To solve this why not simply have a part time coach eg Kear, but also have a selection panel to pick the squad. The coach could make recommendations but ultimately the selection panel would have the final say. The members of this panel would watch most if not all super league games between them and thus pick an unbiased squad with much more emphasis on form rather than the coaches favourites. Im pretty sure this is what the aussies do for both SOO and kangaroo selection.
The selection panel should consist of ex players but not people currently coaching, eg hanley, sculthorpe, joynt.

I'd previously thought this wouldn't work over here because its a system that can bring with it a whole load of extra politics. But you might be onto something there. Tim Sheens is part-time and a panel of selectors pick the squad. Still, if the RFL had to appoint a full time British coach tomorrow with the credentials you'd expect of someone tasked with the gargantuan job of turning round English RL, we'd be scratching around a bit. Especially now that Kear's all but ruled himself out too - rlhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_league/8374591.stmrl

| A Part time coach and an unbiased selection panel would be my choice given the relatively low number of games the National side will play.
Who would we have on the selection panel is as big a question as who would be coach.
Mal Reilly springs to mind, Paul Sculthorpe, Ellery Hanley, Kris Radlinski.
Certainly not Garry Schoffield.

| If the role is basically England coach for 5 games a year and some poorly defined role in 'development' then Hanley, Kear or whoever - doesn't really matter. If it's a real role in development with actual clout then the work that won't get seen for years is far more important than what anyone can realistically achieve with the current squad.

| Before England can ever hope to compete against Australia they MUST have an Australian coach who will start from basics and reform the English style of play to the Australian style...Surely after 37 years England must realise they are falling further & further behind, and it wont be very long before New Zealand and maybe PNG are ranked permanently ahead of England,..they aren't even good to watch these days, they look farcical.

simpsons/simp048.gif I have only been wrong once and thats because I thought I was wrong but I was wrong I was right!
Petty authoritarians aren’t man enough to challenge the actions of a person face to face; instead they incite a forum of rumour, innuendo and half truths, and impose rude sanctions to discourage those who dare question fairness.

Your wrong on so many different levels - are you league freak??
We need better systems, better youth policies, better core skill development, better athletic development and better continual development for those players coaches and officials with potential. But then most people already know this.
We need to understand the Aus game but if we want to beat it we need something different - not just a clone. Not everything that comes out of aus is good.
Initially we may need a good aussie coach in a development role but ultimately we need to get some bright people involved in the game and control our own future.
