If Terence O'Connor were to be knighted, for example (say for services to rugby union), he would be knighted as Sir Terence, not Sir Terry. Sir Terry would be just silly. I believe in giving him the minimum respect he deserves.

A knighthood in not one, the queen knights Elton John as sir Elton which is his stage name and one he chooses to use daily. I can find no evidence that he’s changed his name legally.
