What I liked about the commentary in world club challenge was that I remember there been a penalty given for a ball steal that was actually a knock on. They said once it looked like a knock on, then that was it. They carried on commentating on the game.
On sky we show a ton of replays and Eddie and Stevo constantly bang on about how it was the wrong call rather than forgetting about t and calling the game as it is happening. Then if a try is scored Stevo will so "and this all goes back to the cheap penalty...". They draw too much attention to the negatives going on.

Yeah. I meant my post to include most of the Sky team, whilst Eddie & Stevo are the main culprits it's not exclusive to them.


Yep me too. I don't mind them looking at issues either at half-time or post-game. But during the game just get on with it.

Admittedly I don't watch much Union on TV since I can usually find much more entertainment value in scraping out the crap that builds up in a poorly built drain in my garage but when I happen to lose the remote and can't be bothered to get up and manually change the channel I do see a bit every now and again. The Union commentators don't seem to focus on reffing mistakes/controversies and neither do the football commentators.

He reminds me of John Madden at times. Starts a sentence and then halfway through starts making some kind of laughing/eating noise and never actually finished what he started saying.

And in Eddie Hemmings world, is it possible for 'Little' Robbie Burrow to make anything other than a 'scampering' run?

I watch a fair bit of NRL on Premier Sports and that's one of the first differences I've noticed with the Aussie commentary teams. Now and again Phil Gould - the closest there is to an Australian Stevo - might bang on about a refereeing mistake but he usually ends up getting ridiculed by Peter Sterling or another member of the team.

In other news, I like the involvement of Stuart Cummins. Usually provides a calm and reasoned explanation as to why a ref has made a decision. He's obviously reluctant to disagree with a ref's decision but will say if he saw it differently, though can understand why the ref gave the decision.

He does a lot of "burrowing under tackles". He needs to realise that pun is not, and never has been, funny.

Once you hear him say "its as simple as that " 2 million times per viewing you will be driven insane, its as simple as that.

What's desperately lacking across the Sky team is actual game commentary. Here is no explanation of what is actually happening - it's just the various peoples opinions on whether it was a good or bad tackle/pass/kick/refereeing decision/try.

They should focus more on actually commentating - explaining what is happening, who passed to who, if it was a long/short pass, if the runner had hit a gap, where abouts the kicker is stood, where he kicks to, who's chasing etc etc... A blind person listening to super league coverage would really struggle to follow what is happening in the game, all they'd get is Eddie/Stevo's opinions on who's playing well or bad, and how the ref is doing.

We need real commentary, with then expert analysis to explain how the gaps were created , how the defensive structure is working or is being picked apart... We don't need other peoples opinions - explain to the viewer what's happening and why, and then let the viewer form their own opinion on the game.
