| Quote: Mike87 "What English marquee players do we have now then that will attract NRL and Union clubs to come poaching?
And United have Rooney to keep their quality up by doing this that's how they attract the fans.
Look at Man City now getting 47000 average crowds from and average of around 29/30k they won the premier league currently playing some fantastic football and In the process of building one of the worlds biggest footballing academies, now you tell me if the FA were like the RFL and stopped that club spending money to catch the big teams up do you really think they'd be achieving financially and crowd wise what they do now?
Fact is the RFL are holding the sport back by capping everything simple as that.'"
There are long lists on other threads about who would conceivably be looked at by Aussie clubs, Watkins, briscoe, hall, lomax, Percival (give it a few years) walmsley, currie, charnley, oloughlin mciclorum to name a few at a few clubs have been mentioned in dispatches before.
So man city saw a 17k increase on a 600k per week increase of their wages? That doesn't sound a great rate of return! In fact, that would kill our game faster than the early 90s!
And it's actually eufa who stop clubs spending so more (or rather losing so much, with debt management rules)
Okay. If you say so. It's all the rfls fault. How dare the rfl make all the other clubs vote against bringing in a marquee signing rule. Wait ...

But man city arnt paying the wages Sheik Mansour is, the thing is that eventually City will be self sufficient will everything there putting in place, you don't really think Man Utd would be as huge with out having anyone to hold them back spending money, iam a Man united supporter myself and used to have a season ticket at old Trafford since the early 90s I saw with my own two eyes how we did it, buy the best players shot us up the league we eventually won the league then with the already championship winning squad we could then Go and scout and develop players by drip feeding them into a champion team, you tell me how a team like Wakefield could bring on a academy product as good as Leeds can, Leeds can give their youngsters the chance to learn off the best and grow into the team Wakefield don't have the champion side to give a young player that experience, Leeds were up at the top before the salary cap, so were Wigan so were Saints.

Man utd had the structure and fan base in place to buy the players - trying to do it the other way round leads to Leeds utd.
So Wakefield should invest in their youth systems, develop players to help them rise up the league, whilst contributing to the international pool. Grows the game, and makes them more competitive - no need for a marquee rule.
And your a man utd fan and I have to mention class of 92? Seriously?

| Quote: Saint Simon "Its how you spend the cap that counts. The Dr has stated Salford are up to cap. Wigan have stated they arn't, yet they've got the double. Spend it more wisely.'"
Whilst I have no problem with people debating the rights and wrongs of the Doc, your point is completely ridiculous. That's your point about Wigan the double, not it's how you spend the cap?
London spent up to the cap a few years ago, and they were still garbage. The fact is, to build a team you need to pay higher wages, and try as Noble may claim there is no way he would get the players he wanted without a financial incentive.
If Wigan hadn't gained dispensation for Tomkins, they would have been severely weekender by his loss or the loss of other squad members. So they didn't win double by staying within the cap.
Finally, their halves are pretty gash, Matty Smith and Blake Green are both capable of producing the odd bit quality, but are very inconsistent.
Finally you need the right environment to nurture young talent, I would imagine to doc is currently putting that into place, since that was one his stated objectives. Once those young players have been brought through the development systems, it initially gives that club cheaper players.
The new rule regarding home grown players only counting for £100,000 on the salary cap is testimony to the fact heatherington, McManus and Lenegan merely wish to maintain the current status quo.

Class of 92 wouldn't have happened if there was the class off 93 championship winning team.

So big name signings would of got in the way of some of the greatest talent to come through British football. Cool glad we got that sorted.
Develop the talent, and the joy will come

All well and good saying that, but sadly any decent young players currently produced by the 'smaller' clubs just end up getting poached by the big guns.

Yeah Koukash seems keen to invest in the youth set up as well, although this often gets missed with all the talk of big name players.

oh yes i remember when we bought our current players like Roby, Lomax, Swift, Percival, Jones, Makinson, Wheeler?
Let alone the ones we've lost like Graham and Eastmond.
All of those took years to develop. Yes you buy the odd star, but a balanced team is better with a large proportion of locally based players, bu this takes time and patience

And its the best think he's doing, imo. It will bring long term sustainable success to Salford.

| Look who Salford have brought through over recent years, myler, turner, ratchford! All taken by the bigger clubs! So should the smaller clubs be expected now with the threat or relegation to plow money into youth only for the likes of Leeds, Saints, Warrington to cherry pick the talent we have produced! Now with relegation back and even before then is it viable for small clubs to put a large chunk of there money into youth development when doing so could result in relegation and having them young stars cherry picked. IMO it's only the bigger clubs who can keep there young stars! Leeds,Saint, Warrington, Wigan know this that's why this 100,000 homegrown player rule is so much more beneficial to the top clubs!
