If Giz did go he would go probably go back to train with Wayne Bennett.
He's always kept in touch with WB to the extent that when St George came over to play Wigan in the WCC they trained at Wasps.
I don't think he would be a member of staff but there to learn and would fund himself. After all, he's done that before with WB.
If he did do that, then there'd be plenty of SL clubs offering him a job as head coach.

The majority of replies in this thread are typical thick, stubborn caveman mentalities I've unfortunately come to expect from Rugby League fans.

Rugby Union have benefited from a Rugby League Legend's coaching skills and character for years. How any of you would turn their nose up at him coming back to Rugby League to develop into a coach in our game is way beyond me.

Stop acting so thick.

And here comes the Wigan fan, riding to the defence of a former Wigan "legend".

I suspect most people wouldn't have a problem with Edwards coming back to RL. The issue is with his high handed opinion that he would somehow have walked into a job either here or in the NRL, when there are numerous better qualified people with more recent experience in the game ahead of him in the queue.

If he'd talked about coming back in at the bottom of the coaching pyramid, maybe at a semi-pro or amateur level and working his way back up then fair enough.

Interested to see this list of better qualified people?

I'm pretty certain Shaun Edwards is savvy enough to know that he would probably have to self-fund his time in the NRL (and lets be honest he's just done the same for Andy Hay for a period) and on that basis there would be a queue of clubs willing to take him on.

I'd love him (and I would be 100% suprised) to take over at Warrington when Smith finishes there although he's obviously no where near qualified or suitable as the likes of Phil Vievers, Karl Harrison, Paul Cullen or John Kear.

Better qualified people?

Let's try anyone who has been involved in coaching top level RL at any point in the last ten years.

Edwards was a cracking player. His rugby league coaching experience however, is zero. Nil. Not a day of it in his life on a paid basis.

Him walking straight into a top job in RL either here or in the NRL is about as likely as the RFL appointing Jose Mourinho as England RL coach after the World Cup.

He's not done any RL coaching?
When Wigan went to Brisbane in 1994 for the WCC some of us went down to the ground to watch them train. West was the unofficial coach at the time.
Edwards was out in the middle of the field arms waving as he directed the squad through its paces and moves. Graham West was stood behind the sticks with us fielding the practice goal kicks from Botica, Lydon and Farrell.
He took the coaching, he was captain for the game, he won man of the match in the game and Wigan won the WCC in the Aussies back yard.
Sorry, but don't tell me that Edwards has never coached a RL team.
Which other English coach has won the WCC in Australia?

He is one of the best & most experianced ex players alive today who has played under some great coaches, for anyone to say he could not coach is just plain stupid. To be a sucsessfull coach in a code of football he had very little experiance off proves he has a good brain & coaching ability. If he would be succsessfull is another point all together, that depends on were he was & what players he had to work with.

A few points on this.

1 This was nearly 20 years ago, a lot has changed since then. At that time Chris Anderson was rightly being hailed as one of the very best and most innovative coaches in RL. Yet it is years since Anderson has had a job and his last stint in the NRL ended ignominiously with him labelled a dinosaur unable to keep up with the developments in the modern game. That's how much the game changes. Sure some arm waving on the pitch may still work but are you sure?

2 Sorry to pop your bubble but to the convicts the WCC is little more than a glorified friendly. I'm sure they didn't want to lose but I do you think they put play off style intensity into it? The fact that Edwards was MOM when he failed dismally against Australian teams in competitive games may give a hint to their approach.

3 Just because Edwards was taking them through the moves on the training field are you claiming they were all his work? After all he wasn't actually listed as a coach. Maybe he was just following orders from the real coach.

So, sorry but you have failed to provide any evidence at all of Edwards RL coaching prowess, let alone anything remotely current.

I'll repeat I'm not saying that he couldn't be a good/great RL coach - just that there is nil evidence to support some of the wilder claims here and the thought that NRL clubs would be dazzled by his actual achievements is deluded in the extreme.

"There were ideas of turning my back on union, going back to league, possibly even leaving the country to re-learn my trade as an assistant coach with the ARL.

Maybe you should try reading the article properly before reacting so strongly to what you think Edwards said.
