This was done a few years ago by a university graduate at Leeds going back to 1897 and up t 2010. On the above parameters the top clubs were:-
1. Wigan
2. St Helens
3. Leeds
4. Widnes
12. Bradford
So on actual success this stacks in the West Region favour, however for actual players playing the game and contributing to the sport, East Region comfortably. |

Ah, I misunderstood his point. I thought he were saying Leeds have always had a better average than those from Lancashire, not the combined average. I wouldn't know that, I don't have the figures that go back that far. |

The first 50 years, Salford, Swinton and Oldham (West) with Huddersfield and Hull (East) were big hot beds of rugby league. Hull have lasted the longest as far as a big club is concerned. |

Probably that the influx of Asian immigrants in those other areas have been key in the dropping off of interest? |

Tbf Salford's ground is about a mile away from the biggest club, in the biggest league, in the biggest sport in the world.
And apart from Buenos Aires, the 30 mile radius around Manchester has more professional football clubs that anywhere else in the world. |
