| I don't get all the negativity. Yes Mason came to HKR and had spoken with Toulon just in case his deal at HKR went sour (which it did). He was signed as a quota player then Rovers found Galea couldn't get a Maltese passport so had to work around it. They flew him to Tonga where he met the president and was assured of a Tongan passport. With political matters delaying this procedure Mason wasn't sure he would ever get to play for HKR and I'm sorry but if he was happy to just sit in the stands and take the cash do you really think he'd have been looking for a way out?
Mason then got to play for HKR and in his first game got MOTM (he played well but there were better on that day!) and was a real handful. The next few games after teams put 3 men on him each time he got the ball, they were up on him so quick he couldn't do very much at all. Ok he didn't run his weight but without our leader (Dobson) calling the shots and directing him was there any wonder he didn't perform?
So while I accept he doesn't come without baggage and he will certainly be looking for some kind of high end salary, signing for Widnes or another SL club has got to be better than playing part time for very little money when I'm sure his bank account interest is higher!! He also comes with his Tongan passport so could fit in at most clubs even if their quota spots are full.
Mason isn't a bad player, he needs a better game plan and a scrum half that knows what they're doing, if you can provide him with this he will give you a good game at least once a fortnight IMO. Let's not kid ourselves he was still performing in the NRL a couple of years ago and if played correctly could be a massive signing for the Super League still.
(and no you cannot claim your £5, I am not Willie Mason!!)

| No a HKR fan that see's it for what it is and not drawn in to the "we all hate Mason" clan!
He's done stupid stuff and doesn't do himself many favours I am not hiding away from those facts. He has also had a slump in his career but that isn't to say a good coach cannot get better from him now.
For example, Joel Clinton came to HKR and had 5 very average games at the start of that season. He was called by the fans, not someone that would be snapped up quickly by any other club. Game 6 was like we'd signed a totally new player, he was running strongly, had an offload and gave our pack that extra grunt he was signed for. So in 6 games he'd had 1 good game (the same as Mason).
Give Mason a two year deal an off season and a position to make his own and I think he's a valuble player.
Would I have him back at HKR? No probably not, just because there is far too much history between club and player. Do I think he'd add to the competition, yes.

| How would you rate his six appearances for Hull KR? He'll be 32 in a few months and hasn't played a decent game of rugby league since 2010. Personally I wouldn't want him anywhere near my club.

Hardly Masons fault.
And when did he
I agree that it's different from a lot of 'journalism' these days in that it's true. Mason did the dirty on his friends, club, its supporters and the game all for coin.

| As I said his 6 games were a little disapointing. He didn't look for too much work and when he did get the ball he was closed down very quickly. His first game he knew all eyes were on him and he really looked the part but I think adrenaline got him through that one. His match fitness struggled but as said Clinton took time to get in to his role at the club but after back to back games or so he was at one stage touted for MOS.
You are right having only played a few games here and there over the past two years it would be a big gamble but then what about a drug cheat being banned for years then getting a contract. Hudson hasn't played badly (not as good as he used to be) since his return. If a SL club moved sharpish they could have his pre-season intensified and give him the first 6-10 games and I reccon he'd be a real handful.

| It's impossible to put a positive spin on the Mason & HKR debacle; it was a pretty shameful episode for the club, the RFL and the player.
I would suggest that he is very much the author of his own misfortune.

| It is a shame that it is Mason that we discussing. The reported experiences he has had reflect what a lot of us think about Rugby Union. I was interested to read the quote about having to wait 28 minutes to gat a pass. Anyone else and this would be a great example to show to any of our players who were thinking of changing codes.

| I'm glad the article pointed out that the Guyra Superspuds are based between Armidale and Glen Innes... I was having trouble with the geography for a second but reference to those two helped immensely

Problem is, the clubs he'd be an addition to would be unlikely to have the ability to pay Mason what he wants
