in the end of the day, more money doesnt mean a better game
every person in NSW has had AFL shoved down their throat, yet the NRL continues its growth
the cream always rises to the top
we destroyed RU, AFL is next
even with the damage of the SL war the nrl will become the number 1 sport by a long way again
if AFL had a SL war it wouldnt recover
only RL couldve have a SL war and recover'" the afl can have their billion i still won't be watching..

The AFL gets more money because it's a middle class sport. Advertisers, and therefore networks, are willing to pay more.'"
What?
A report came out a few years ago saying RL had the richest support base in Australia, the only place where RL was beat was from RU having more Rich people involved, RL had the richest ones and a way bigger spread overall.
I'll see if I can find the report.

Quote: WHAT is the richest sport in Australia as measured by fan base? Rugby union is likely to be the first sport to jump to mind - all those tweed jackets, leather elbow patches, Range Rovers and merchant bankers would seemingly guarantee the No.1 spot.
But a new survey by data marketing group, Torque, has found while union certainly has more seriously rich fans, rugby league is Australia's richest sport.
This is partly because it has more fans in the nation's most populous and expensive state, but it's still good news for a code widely regarded as the sport of the working class.

Torque says rugby league is the richest sport in "terms of the total affluence of its supporter base" - just beating the Australian Football League.
Part of the reason for this is that average incomes in rugby league strongholds NSW and Queensland are higher than in southern AFL states such as Victoria and South Australia.
... It also raises the question of whether rugby league has been marketing itself to the right audience.
... The image of the game is not reflected by its fan base," Cooper says. "But it is surprising that rugby league is as mid-market as it is."
...rugby league has more than its fair share of executive, professional & managerial supporters the survey found.'"

Couple of things......market research is very unreliable. 9 out of 10 cats prefer whiskas.......how the fu(k do they know that ....
Next up....Torque, the company that carried out this market research .....not sure how reliable they are....but they seem to be based in 2 physical addresses and have a PO Box address in Brisbane.....but very rarely do CEO's and COO's put themselves on websites as the first point of contact......unless thay are also the sales team....which points to them being fairly small, localised in the Q'land NSW region....oh, they also have an NRL team as a case study.
Then there's the comment...about RL marketing itself to the right people? RL is working class.........what has changed is the dollar in the working mans pocket over the last 30 years.....working class people used to have 1 TV....now we all have a plazma in every room...2 cars outside the door...etc...etc...
I have no doubt that there are loads of wealthy people who are NRL fans...same as there are loads of AFL fans who are properly wedged up as well........whilst Union, which has very few fans, has the advantage of most of the players and fans are wealthy the day they are born, go to nice schools, decent uni's and regardless of their academic results, they all get good jobs on good money.
Spin it all you like, but if you were looking at the average income for all fans of all 3 games...Union is where it's at.
That said, I would say that the NRL could look at targeting the Union fans..........I was a union guy.....watched a game of live league and that was that.....I now consider myself a league fan. As much as I'd like to think I am....I ain't unique...

| eels mate theres also the reporting that shows that RL areas generate 50% more advetising revenues than AFL areas
people just dont understand that RL comprises 58% of australias population whilst AFL is 42%.
even worse for AwFuL fans is the fact that given incomes are so much higher in sydney, the value of avertising in sydney is worth so much more not only because of the greater population, but also the higher incomes
whoever gets the next NRL TV rights, whatever they pay, theyll make millions of it

| would be great if 10's HD channel became the home of RL. National coverage, high definition, treat with respect for a change. Not so sure 10 actually have the $'s availble though to make an outright bid.

| With Packer and Murdoch on board I can't see it happening, but money would be the least of their worries.

remember mate packers also an owner of channel 10 now, so he could want them for himself on his own
i think 10 are a serious bidder, and if so we may even get MORE than the AFL get.
hold onto your hats guys, its going to be a massive year for TGG

| the current RL networks cant afford to lose the NRL, especially fox but also nine with 7 overtaking it in ratings
faced with competition from 10 and 7 the existing rights holders will be desperate to keep the nrl
i really hope 10 get the lot, they did a fair job with RL in the 90s and it would be funny seeing fox and 9 struggling without rl
teach them a lesson for taking us for granted the silly merkins

| isn't 10 and Fox sports partners now? Same scenario as we had with 9 and fox. At least if 10 put it on One then it will go national which is something.
