There is limited free parking available at The George Hotel as well as numerous pay parking facilities around the town centre. Huddersfield Town have an away match on October 9th so it is reasonable to expect that anyone wishing to park at the Stadium and walk to the Hotel would be able to do so although obviously I cannot confirm that as it is a different venue.

It's important to note that whilst the RFL are supportive of my role with Supporters Direct and do indeed put some funding into it (along with The Coop Group), Supporters Direct is a very separate organisation and this event is not in any way being run by the RFL.

Its true, that many clubs do look upon their supporters as merely fundraisers and this is something Supporters Direct are trying to address by increasing supporter representation and influence within rugby league.

Cheers, Laura

There's also 2 hours free parking at the nearby Tesco.

Last Few Places Available for RL Conference

A small number of places are still available for Supporters Directs first ever rugby league conference, to be held at The George Hotel Huddersfield on Saturday October 9th.

The conference, which brings together supporters, players and journalists from across rugby league, aims to show the positive differences that can be made to the game through greater supporter involvement and representation.

Laura,

[sizeI applaud what you are trying to achieve.[/size

The key however will always be the willingness of the people running the Clubs to genuinely foster a meaningful two-way relationship.

Sadly, that was not my experience ... the Trust I was involved in was not treated with the respect it deserved (you are aware of some of the issues). When committee members have full time jobs and they are trying to help a Club in their spare time and often giving more time than they really should, the last thing they want in return is 'smoke and mirrors'.

I am sure there are many examples where things have worked so much better and sincerely hope that my experiences and those of another Trust we met last year are those of the minority.

[sizeWishing you every success with the Conference.[/size

Gary.

This is pretty insignificant really, the directors are not the club, if the directors arent interested in the trust then you have to become so big and strong that they have no choice but to let you in.

Often when directors have no interest in the supporters trust, its not long before the directors are leaving the club......

sometimes, you can drop lucky and get a set of directors who understand the needs of the trust, and sometimes you don't, but at no point should the trust give up due to lack of acknowledgement from the directors. You have to make it so they sit up and listen..............

If enough of the fans are behind the trust then things will move in the right direction eventually, but sometimes, these things take time.

Some fair points indeed ...

The Club concerned has two owners (with the CEO being the major shareholder!)

You're certainly right about some things taking time ... I hope ultimately that the fans can become influential with this Club but I fear that will not be the case for some time yet (if ever).

Well what will be will be, if the fans care enough and there is enough sentiment amongst them to make a change, then change will come, otherwise, change either isn't needed or there is not enough support base in the town to wield enough power.

Supporters Direct are there to help you, I know we had to do all this before supporters direct came about , in fact I remember me and Cliff Spracklen at a Supporters Direct Meeting when Bramley didn't even exist, and his words struct huge chords amongst the soccer trusts.

The gist of his speech was that Bramley existed only as a set of supporters, it has no pitch, no players, no club, but the supporters still existed and it wasa they who eventually got the club playing again.

Anyhow, there are huge levels of difference in each club, what works for one doesn't for another, get along to the SD conference and learn some new tricks! icon_smile.gif

If parking is a problem can a suggest the conference is transferred to Leigh RL .... there's plenty of parking there, especially on match days

All fair points but speaking to numereous fans over the past few years who have become dissatisfied with the way the game is going they are not at odds with their own particular boards. My own club for instance where the Directors are first and foremost fans ,doing their best trying to keep up with the ever moving goalposts .Most fans find the bigest threat to their club to come from the body who you would think was their to support them .The made up franchise system rules, promotion and religation (or lack of it) uneven share out of monies and if your anything lower than Super League the RFL are not interested are these things going to be addressed at the meeting?

I'm not privvy to the agenda for the meeting, however, all your points are valid issues surrounding our game, some think good, some bad, ultimately though, not every club needs a trust per sé, not every club is the same as the next, but every club has the same Rugby League fans, i'm sure if you attend the meeting you will meet people who are more and less up to speed with the workings within the game than you are, but most of all you will learn a lot from sharing your own issues and ideas for the game amongst similar minded people, albeit from different angles of the game.

I urge anyone with ideas and comments about the game a whole to attend if they can and offer their own experiences up at the meeting.

There are obviously a number of issues in the game that affect all clubs, regardless of the league they play in and these are definitely issues we would like to look at down the line. We encourage all supporters trusts to develop as big a membership as possible in order to strengthen their voice and as the umbrella organisation, it is the same for us. We need to develop a larger network of trusts in order to strengthen our voice as only by representing a good proportion of supporters will we realistically be able to tackle the bigger issues in the game.

We also need to ensure that rather than simply being unhappy and complaining about things not working, we put forward sensible, workable ideas that can be implemented throughout the game.

So, in short, the conference won't be focussing solely on the issues you have mentioned above but they are certainly something on our radar for the future. This first conference is about showcasing what Supporters Direct is about and showing the variety of things supporters trusts can do.

It's also worth noting that at the end of this year there is going to be a consultation period focussed on the Championships, similar to the one recently held around the community game. As part of the consultation, SD will be submitting proposals to the RFL and everyone attending the conference will have the opportunity to put their ideas forward. I plan to include as many of these as possible in our proposal.

Oh well that `s a relief then, glad to hear we will all be able to give our views about the way the RFL are slowly reducing the Championship clubs to merely feeders for the Super League. One thing I would like to know is why us "mere mortals" never get to hear what is on the agenda at these RFL away days so we could all have an input. We have got to stop leting them just alter the rules to whoever they want in .We are just asking for a level playing field for us all ,each club is just as important as the next.
