Yeah that was a bit daft. almost as daft as my mate in the pub after saying "oh that's a big pint" no mate, a pints a pint. I think he goes to the bar and asks for a small pint for a half or something. Muppet.

Not as daft as it seems, unless all pitches are 100 metres long, which they ain't.
The 20 and 40 metre lines are measured from the goal lines. So a kick from the 40 metre line, that ends up crossing the opposite 20 metre line, could well be shorter.
Saying that, I doubt the field of play at Old Trafford is shorter than 100 metres, goal line to goal line

It probably will be to fit the in-goals in. You could see the footy goal line behind the try line and THAT is probably 100m

It might get you more money, but it definitely doesn't look more professional.
And in England we can count, so we just think "hmmm he's 5 lines away from the try line so that must be halfway!"'" Try telling that too 250 million Americans that there pitch looks demented. It's a professional game so the grounds have to be up to scratch aswell .Can you imagine someone watching league for the first time and wondering why do they have lines,if they saw the numbers they might get the drift eh?

| The problem for me was that when it went to that side camera, you couldnt tell wereabouts they were. The eastmond try, when he gathered the ball i thought he was still 30/40 metres out!

Wiki sez, the playing surface at Old Trafford (for football, I imagine) is 105 x 68 m[2] [ior[/i 114.8 x 74.4 yd.
So, although the RL in-goal stradles what is normally the goal-line for footer, I'd suspect the pitch on Saturday was 100m, end-to-end.
And of course, if Wiki sez it's true...
