For me Owen has to be selected - we will get hammered anyway so try and build a team for the future'"
Smith didnt even think he warranted a place in the train on sqaud, which i think is a poor choice myself, i'm not saying he's ready to be englands no.1 fullback, but he looks like he might be our promising long term option so why not put him in for the experience?

| I do understand the need for defensive 'solidity', but England will never get close to Australia by picking a full back who can tackle but adds nothing in attack. If Senior isn't playing then I'd seriously look at Leon Pryce in the centres, because the gap between Senior and anyone else is frightening.

Quote: Frosties. "Gareth Widdop?'"
Very good call even though he's untested at the highest grade!
I think his grounding at Melbourne storm would see him flourish on the international stage.
He's just been promoted to the Melbourne first grade where he would almost certainly be the first choice full-back if it wasn't for a certain Mr Billy Slater.
There are a number of NRL clubs where Widdop would be the out and out first choice full-back.
I doubt that Tony Smith even knows about him and I further doubt that he would have the bottle to pick him for the train on squad and possibly play him in the team.
There are some very high opinions of him from the likes of Peter Sterling and Andrew Johns.
Plenty of praise from fans of all other clubs too:

The Rugby Football League are in the process of reviewing the video that you are referring to. We do not condone behaviour of this nature and have contacted the player’s employer, Hull F.C., who have confirmed that they are dealing with the incident under their club rules.

| CGD none really.
Its a massive step up to first grade and if England want to pick a Toyota Cup player in their squad it says they are desperate.
Plenty of young players shine in the lower grades never to make it at top level, there was a player called Shannon Walker with the Titans two years ago anyone know what happened to him?
|
|
|
| He's playing Queensland Cup.
Just thinking of all the fullbacks in the NRL...
Billy Slater
Jarryd Hayne
Luke Pattern
Darius Boyde
Karmichael Hunt
Matthew Bowen
Brett Stewart
William Zillman.....
I mean....I'm struggling to think of a player this kid would push aside so easily.
Best the poms have not...but not quite NRL level yet. He might get some games on the wing for the Storm next year though.

| I would suggest that Tony Smith do two things
1. Play a regular full back in the full back position (and regular player in every other spot too)
2. If a player has consistently failed to impress at international level, assume it will continue and give somebody else a chance to impress
The above points to one man in my mind and that's Shaun Briscoe
As for players from the NRL (or Toyota Cup) - maybe when they have proved themselves over a couple of seasons as Briscoe has... just a few months ago people were suggesting that Jordan Tansey was the nailed on England full back after two games for the Roosters first team!!
|
|
|
| To be fair only idiots were suggesting that about Jordan Tansey.
I agree though, I'd rather see a bunch of new players completely fail for England know that they are not the ones that will turn things around than see the same old faces looking back from under the goal posts as Australia scored 38 points in the first half.
