My worry in all this is that Wigan ask to have the cap increased and they get it. The RFL have gone back on it being a level playing field and now the difference in spending between the top and bottom is £100k a year more. Which results in clubs being unable to move up or down the ladder, just like in the old days.
Can I ask the Wigan fans a question. What if Josh Charnley has a mega year and is targeted by Union? He will be offered four or five times his Wigan deal etc. Do Wigan then let him leave? Force him to stay and upset him and the squad morale? Or do they apply for another increase?
Wigan's youth system is full of brilliant players, or so Rogues tells us depsite Maguire never using any of them and burning his squad out. What happens if Wigan bring three or four through like Saints have done with Makinson, Lomax, Gaskell, Wheeler and they are all targeted by Union clubs with offers of mega contracts?
Can anyone honestly see Wigan stopping at £100k?

The timing is EXACTLY the issue.
Saints had failed to keep Graham despite offering as much as they could afford to; maybe another £100k would have made him think twice.
Maybe he'd have gone anyway, but to introduce a cap amendment which some clubs can benefit from immediately while others have already lost the opportunity to take advantage of it is highly unfair.

exactly....its really not that hard to understand.
i bet saints would have loved this cap change rule to try and keep graham.
as good as sam tomkins is..... you could easily say that graham is a bigger loss to saints than tomkins would be to wigan.
props like graham are irreplaceable.

Seemingly easy to ignore, though...

By that reasoning there would be no time at all which would be fair to bring in the cap amendment.
As it stands they'd done it during the off season when the cap isn't live, which makes more sense than bringing it in right in the middle of the season. Teams will still have let players go who they could have afforded, but that could happen at any point during the season.

I agree totally the timing is off.
But your acting as if Wigan haven't just lost a player to a different sport who was in the dream team last year, and who plays for England? If Wigan had done this sooner maybe they could have kept Joel as well.

If we put all club bias to one side, with Salary Cap changes needing to be ratified by the clubs as a whole (I think), why would the rest of the league vote to allow the Wigans, Wires and Saints of the sport to spend £2m for instance when there's already a massive chasm between us and the lesser teams?

Then perhaps your chairman should have got of his arris and petitioned the RFL like Ian Lenegan had the foresight to do so.

Get a grip, he is hardly going to send us over the cap limit, and Gelling is not even an NRL player.

Eamonn has seen the need for the the salary cap to be amended for many years, often speaking about it in the press.

These things take time. In fact, if it hadn't been for the groundwork done by him in making sure this issue, and potential solutions were discussed and developed over many months, it's unlikely the amendment would have been agreed in time for Wigan to keep Tomkins (until the World Cup at least).
