"When the Super League was set up, it was proposed that Workington merge with Barrow, Carlisle and Whitehaven to form a Cumbrian super club. This was, however, resisted and an unmerged Workington took part in Super League but would record only two wins all season. They finished bottom of the table and were relegated to the Northern Ford Premiership with significant debts".

Barrow for Super League 2015:

Quote: SEB "What sort of crowd could Barrow realisitically expect to attract?'"

If you're talking about us as a mid-table SL team, then I'd say we'd better crowds of 4 or 5 current SL clubs. If we were to stay in SL and sustain reasonable success then the club has a big enough catchment for 8,000-10,000 crowds (as we attracted on and off in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's).

The new young dynasty of super saints is coming to a ground near you. Welsby-Dodd-Simms-Eaves-Rizzelli, not Eastmond...the future is coming.:Dwarfs, Gnomes, Halflings/GNOME2.JPG

Sleeping Giant comes to mind....with a bit more finance for the ground and players they could hold there own.
Wonder if James Graham would be interested in playing for a cumbrian superleague team.

Wouldn't that be nice. It would be great if we made it and we could 'bring the boys back home' - locals like Ade Gardner, Matt Gardner, Peter Lupton, Ben Harrison and Ollie Wilkes - not to mention other young locals signed on at SL clubs playing in their academy's.

How is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home winemaking course, and I forgot how to drive?:icons077e_files/4864-863FALH-msnicons.jpg

What's so funny ???

Barrow have a much bigger catchment than a lot of SL teams and given a competitive team in SL I think 8K-10K would certainly be achieveable.

The problem is that an RL fan under 30 will probably only remember Barrow as a struggling lower league team.

Anyone 40 or over should be able to remember a club with very good crowds who regularly graced the top division and played in major cup finals. We were certainly every bit as big a club as Cas, Wakey, Leigh, Salford and a few others to-boot. In the early 80's we were the 4th/5th best supported club in the land.

Had Murdock and SL arrived 10 years earlier our path could easily have followed that of many current SL teams.

The biggest hurdle is our stadium. We own it lock, stock and barrel, but it needs major development. However, plans are afoot.

Watch this space.

We are averaging more than Leigh this season (2,200) and are only 200 lower on average than Halifax. Fax have been boosted by a couple of live matches as well. Barrow only get 1 home televised match this season and that isn't until July !! Our fan base is growing quickly and is up over 50% on last season - that's pretty good IMO.

You have to remember that this is our first season back at the higher level. The likes of Widnes, Fax, Leigh and Haven have never played lower than 2nd tier rugby and a lot of those clubs have spent several years in SL.

What crowds do you think Hudds, Celtics, Wakey etc would be getting if they had just spent the last 20 years in the doldrums ??? I remember when Hudds dropped out of SL they were averaging barely 2,000 in the NFP. Look at them now (the same goes for HKR as well).

Give us the chance and we'll prove it !

I think you'll find that, rather than being a boost, televising a game (on a Thursday night, remember) leads to lower crowds. Not many away fans will be able to get to Barrow in time for kick off and back home again at a reasonable hour with the following day being a workday for most. Anyway, if your form continues to keep you near the top, I'm sure you'll get a few more televised games towards the end of the season.

I've a ton of respect for Barrow for the work that they are doing and the progress they are making, but I presume said average crowd is bumped up by the Wigan cup game, while I must have imagined those years that Leigh were in the bottom division in the 90's.

That average is league only. If you include NR and Challenge Cup I think it's a tad over 2,500.

Sorry, I didn't realise Leigh had spent time in 'division 3' or whatever it was called at the time. I was just making the point that we haven't had as much time as others to build up a bigger core support.

With respect to these teams, it's no easy attracting fans to games against Blackpool, Skolars and Hunslet every week. We were the best supported team in NL2 for several years (1,450 last season), but I think we'd have struggled to get much bigger crowds had we not been promoted.

You also have to remember that our Chairman doesn't really believe in free tickets or promotions, so what you see is what you get with our attendances (unlike others !!!). Every adult punter has stumped-up for a season ticket or £13/£14 to get in.

Just concentrate on what your own club is doing rather than the promotions of others; fact is, I doubt many of said freebies are for the use of adults, bar the Co-Operative family tickets. However, with the lack of local competition up there, there is certainly potential for Barra but clubs like ourselves and 'Fax are suffering for playing at a lower level than we have in recent memory - your 'glory days' being so far back could actually be a big advantage, as it naturally lowers expectations.

admittedly it was a cup tie , but they got 6,200 against Wigan with the warriors getting only 1700 tickets - club told me they could have easily sold more-

maybe not a perfect example but clearly the town and surrounding area doesnt need the game sellng to it

Ground would need plenty of work but like others have said it was a great occasion last month- thoroughly enjoyed it
