| I must say I'm pretty dissapointed in Mintball's post. Terry Newton was never the brightest button in the box, and he certainly played the game hard.
To call him a thug on the pitch is out of line, plenty of players now and before him play the game harder and push the rules further than Newton. All you have to do is listen to the respect he's being given not just from players he has played with, but those he has played against. This includes a man he reportedly 'paralysed' the face of in a game against St Helens.
His undoing was his own stupidity, and that (as you say) is a fact. However its important to not forget that before this man was forced out of Wigan he was consistently going toe to toe with Cunningham in a competition for hooking supremecy. Like Cunningham he wore his heart on his sleeve, none moreso than in Wigan's last GF appearance.
His ability on the field was plane to see, and he was a gentleman off the field. What irks me is that on Saturday we should be celebrating the culmination of the careers of 2 great Lancashire hookers. Instead the 40-odd thousand Wigan supporters will be remembering a player who carried their passions on to the greatest stage, and often executed them with style. That's not post-mortem hero worshipping, it's credit where credit's due.
RIP Terry lad.

Not at all. It's just you seem to be actively seeking places to bring his drug ban up, and in great length. We all know what he did. I don't think for one second people forgot about it. But you seem to think we're purposefully not bringing it up to try and rewrite what happened. It's been mentioned enough times in the media, infact it's been the focal point of most articles on his death. So our grief that's apparantly following the media-tabloid-grief.. I don't understand.

| IMO Terry paid rugby league as it should be played and has been for most of its history - fearlessly, aggressively and skillfully. Can't see what more could be asked of a player of TGG.

Everyone understands the point you're making.
You just don't need to spit it at people like a rabid rottweiler less than 2 days after the event. You're smart enough to make your point respectfully, with would be much more appropriate.
This isn't someone none of us ever met or knew. There are people on here who knew Terry as a friend, played with and against him, drank at his pub, watched him for years - or just met him briefly and appreciated the time he spent talking to them (myself included).
He had his faults, no-one is denying that - and I think if you bother to check, most people have acknowledged the huge mistake he made and the fact he was less then the ideal role model. But not felt the need to be obnoxious about it.

| Every opposition fan loved to "hate" Terry and i'm sure he knew that and used it in a positive way for his team. There's nothing wrong with the odd villain in among our teams and Terry was one of those. He played for some of the top sides in the country, represented our country and was always one of the better players in all of those sides. He was out of our game for a while and we kind of forgot about him, but just like anyone else who had served their time, he would have been welcomed back with open arms in to our game. It's a crying shame when anyone takes those final actions as Terry did, heaven only knows what was going on in his head that lead him to do it. For people like us, the rugby league family, again we feel like we've lost someone close. Thoughts are with his family and close friends, rest in peace Terry!

| need to word this carefully but if any good is going to come out of this whole tragic affair then the story of an excellent and dedicated rugby league player who makes one big mistake in his career, one which contributes massively to the downward spiral that lead to sundays awful events, could serve as a warning and deterrent to other players who might have been tempted to go down the same route as terry did.
sincere condolences to the family and friends of terry newton

10603.jpg Is it true that Richard Agar's favorite movie of all time is Groundhog Day or does he just generally like the same boring s**t day after day, season after season?:10603.jpg |

Not at all, the real shame is that some people clearly don't have the ability to show a little respect.
I am all for free speach, but there is a time and a place and this thread was not it, especially for a few of the comments certain individuals came up.
As for your previous comment about a "dumbed down society", I personally would have been more concerned about the state of our society if certain people had not been challenged about their disrespectful comments at this sad time.
As I say, nothing to do with censoring free speach, but if people can't show a little respect on a thread like this then they shouldn't post, simplez.

| For those who want to keep it to cold hard facts and forget sentiment. How about these facts:
Some of these comments questioning people remembering Terry were made less than 48 hours after his family discovered his body.
The rugby league community is made up of more than just supporters. Its made up of players, ex-players, back-room staff, officials. A lot of whom WOULD have spoken highly of Terry a week ago because they knew him as a friend and have lost a friend. They will be remembering a friend on Saturday.
I didn't know him personally (unless you count a cheeky snog when we were 16) but he was a fantastic talent in the game who wore his heart on his sleeve. He did some awful things but that was a small part of his game and him as a person. Its sad that those are the moments of his career that will stand out.
I am deeply saddened by his death and the circumstances surrounding it. I offer my wholehearted condolences to his family and friends and will show my support to those in the RL community who are missing a loved one by observing the silence on Saturday and paying my respects.
You may think that this is all hypocritical, you may wish to go on ramblings about Hitler, the Daily Mail and mock the intelligence of those paying respects but now is not the time.

| Maybe, rather than blaming the RFL all the time, Demetriou and Bloem (and the irony of him having a go there!) could tell them what they need other than councilling, if that's not good enough. From what I've read, the RFL were helping Newton by having him speak to kids about the mistakes he made...then again, it's always easy to blame Red Hall for everything.
Wonder if Demetriou, as his last captain, kept in touch to help?
