| Toronto has established a lead, just ahead of Toulouse and London.
It is interesting (and in my opinion good) that so many English rugby league fans want to see a team from Canada, and another from France, enter Super League. These fans realise that such a development could be the salvation of rugby league in the northern hemisphere, because it will bring more fans, more players, and more money into the game. It will also boost the international dimension of the game -- especially the World Cup -- if those clubs can develop a majority of locally born players in their squad (Toulouse has already done that).

and Catalans have how many locally trained players?
I welcome expansion, but on a level playing field, Toronto must be well above cap.

Catalans have more locally trained players than Leigh.
Toronto are not above the salary cap, the salary cap is the same for all Super League and Championship clubs.
Talking about a level playing field, Leigh received £500,000 in central funding, while Toronto received £0 in central funding and pay for away teams travel and accommodation when they play at the Lamport Stadium.

Over 50 years of pain, pleasure, frustration, joy, heartache and ecstasy that supporting Leigh has given me but I would not swop it.: |

| Rarely come on this forum as the anti Leigh bias from certain users makes it a joke but I will respond to this.
In no other major sport could a team from another country be allowed to enter its premier division after two seasons in its lower league in fact 3 years since the club was formed.Whats happening with the Super League at present is making us a laughing stock and the fact that they have not officially announced what is happening next season yet is beyond belief.
I am not an anti expansionist and have nothing against Toronto but SL clubs will soon wake up to the fact their is only one winner and it wont be them,if Toronto get promoted I hope they sign every top player going and walk away with SL,it will be just deserts for the selfish SL Directors who only care about their clubs and not a jot about RL in the UK.

I dont know if you are right her.
Toronto were encouraged to join the league by Nigel Wood and after lots of comments about it not being right for them to start in the Championship or, Super League, they joined the third tier.
After the farce of having big spenders in the third tier, they gained promotion and no look to be serious challengers for a SL spot.
Personally, I'm still unsure what they add to the competition and the logistics are far from straight forward but, assuming that it isn't scrapped, they will need to abide by the salary cap.
Their inclusion does have the potential to spawn some N.American players but, this will certainly take some time and IF they are successful, it could help develop another RL playing nation, which can only be a good thin.
If they succeed then great but, right now, there is a long, long way to go.
As for anti Leigh bias, I just dont get it.
The reality is that Leigh are promotion chasers and have everything in place to play at SL level but, just like Toronto, they dont have a divine right to do so.
You are spot on about some SL directors being selfish and this will never change and a half decent governing body would be able to find the right balance for developing the game for the benefit of all and not just for the few.
Currently RL is going backwards, falling further and further behind both the NRL and Union and with no plan to halt the reverse in fortunes, which is why they are clutching at straws and hoping that N.America will save us, which seems very unlikely.

I’m not anti expansionist but I don’t want expansion clubs in the league. Sounds anti expansionist to me.
Oh and as for no other sport would allow clubs from other countries, see Rugby Union’s Super Rugby and Pro 14 competitions.

We are honoured to have you join us....and for the record, there's a bias against most clubs on here, but your inferiority complex has been noted!

Hmm.....when SANZAR decided to cull South African franchises to make their comp more relevant, the Guinness Pro 12 became the Pro 14 in a heartbeat....this essentially 2nd tier competition has its own TV deal and a Major Stand alone Sponsor as well as making club/franchise Rugby in Europe relevant outside the Aviva and the Top 14 in France.....not to mention including the Italians who are getting better each year.......so yep, at least one other Major sport does allow this......as do the Aussies who welcomed the NZ team back in 1992.....bu comparison Toronto bring nothing as yet, but they might do.......although I do doubt it.

I can speak to North America, where major sports differ in that they don't have promotion and relegation between divisions. Instead, they allow expansion. Toronto is home to three expansion teams "from another country" having the only Canadian team in Major League Baseball (Blue Jays, 1977), the only Canadian team in the NBA (Raptors, 1995) and the first Canadian team in Major League Soccer (Toronto FC, 2005). These expansion teams go straight into the top tier of the sport - I've no idea what a franchise costs but it's definitely not cheap.
So having the only Canadian team playing in the RFL isn't at all weird to us.
Yes, Toronto is on the same continent, but our NHL, MLS, NBA and MLB athletes fly great distances between the west & east coasts and deal with jet lag so it's all part of the game in North America.
There are long-standing hopes that a European (ice) hockey team will eventually join the National Hockey League (NHL) and I'd guess that any prospective backers are closely following the Wolfpack experience.

The RFL only expanded the SL salary cap across all 3 divisions when Toronto Wolfpack HOW MANY TIMES?????
£20 a ticket and £15 on beer and merchandise.....so an away fan is worth £35. At best, 1,000 is the average away support split across 11 rounds and I am being really generous here, so Toronto, replacing say Wakefield will cost a SL club £35,000.
The minimum turnover of a SL club is £4,000,000 so Toronto instead of Widnes is worth less than 1% of a SL clubs turnover.
There are many valid reasons for and against expansion into America, but "AWAY FANS" isn't one of them. :d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_76030.jpg |
