Who?

If he's not in the NRL or SL, he's a nobody.

I don't follow popular culture or Football, generally I don't follow sports news as my only sports interest is Cycling and RL. However, because you can't escape talking to people (friends/pub/shops) you still pick up on trivia such as - Big names in the top 3 UK sports (Association, Cricket, Union), whatever's happening in the latest Reality show, the basics of some sitcoms.
Granted, as a teacher I get more of this because I work with over 300 students who all bring me up to date with this stuff, but even when I worked in an office with two mutes I still couldn't avoid it. Do you really not go to online Sports sites, really not follow the news at all (even uncle's copy of the Mail?), not watch the news? (If you don't, you should, there'll be an election soon - you need to be informed).
ps: There's no way to convey the fact that I am flabbergasted by your stance, but not angry or condemning other than to write it here.

ps

The press reported a survey yesterday where a third of students could not name Gordon Brown as leader of the Labour Party. The guy gets saturation media coverage.

My cousin watches 'Dancing on ice' I could tell you nothing about contestants / judges or how the thing is scored. (The coverage it gets far exceds welsh RU). I think there was someone from hollyoaks on it a while back. I know nothing about the storylines of that soap or the cast members. This flabbergasts my cousin. I could be flabbergasted that my cousin does not know how good Goren and Eames / Nichols and Wheeler are in one of my favourie programmes.

If you are not interested in someything you filter it out.

Quote: belgianxiii "He was in the news, front of any Sports Site you would look at, because he came out of the closet. I don't give a flying monkey about Association Football, but I can still name half of the England team (why? I'm not even English!) because it's in the news and I don't live with a bag on my head.

Because I don't live with a bag on my head I can name the following union players

Sorry - don't agree.

Of your list, I would know recognise the names of Cipriani, Wilkinson, Martin Johnson and Mike Catt from England, Henson from Wales and O'Driscoll from Ireland. And I suspect that is already more than the average person (and a lot less than I could have named 15 or 20 years ago).

Media is way more fragmented and specialized than it used to be. I can follow politics and business stories from round the world without sitting through 30 minutes of dumbed-down BBC news. I look at all of the broadsheets on a weekday, but I wouldn't even glance at say the horse racing, golf or rugby union

I'm sure you're right that Gareth Thomas was front page news on all sport news websites, but how does that help when I would just have the RL section bookmarked and go straight there? Likewise, 20 years ago, people might have watched the RU internationals because there were only 4 tv options (and the other choices were probably a black and white film and the open university).

Quote: GIANT DAZ "Right, i'm commenting because i wanted to know how big a signing this would have on a RL team because i dont follow Union so i am not aware of the players in that particular sport..........i dont read newspapers and i dont watch TV apart from football and Rugby league.
i dont wear a bag on my head i just dont have any interest in Rugby Union at all, i am not calling the sport of Rugby Union in this debate but merely trying to find out who the guy is and what impact it would have on RL and trying to understand how big a signing it could be for the sport.
I'm sorry i cant name any Rugby Union players, neither can i name most premier league footballers even though i am a football fan, just because someone is big in a certain sport or has been in the news doesn't mean everyone has to have heard of them.
Like i said i dont read the papers i dont watch TV so how would i have heard of this fella ?'"

i love reading about people who are so dedicated to RL as yourself. that was enjoyable reading that post.

My club has been through administration, almost going under, debt, you name it. But through the passion and dedication of some amazing people (the Rovers Supporters Group) we pulled through it and are now doing fine. By sorting it I meant chipping away at it slowly (better merchandising, increased sponsorship, reduced wagebill etc), like our neighbours Hull (who were £2million in debt) have gradually done.
We will do this whilst staying true to our roots in East Hull, not moving around, sh****ng on fans (e.g. like those in Bridgend) at the first sign of failure. icon_wink.gif

For god sake why is it so hard to accept that i haven't heard of this guy - i am not just saying it to cause an argument or pretend to be dumb i really do not take any interest in Rugby Union, Reality TV shows or read newspapers that are generally full of celebrity gossip and other associated mindnumbing rubbish that the majority of the country partake in, i dont talk to many people , i dont go shopping, i dont go to the pub and people who i do talk to know what interests me and what doesn't, therefore they tend not to talk about things of little or no interest to me.
if i go on sports websites i only look at the sports i am interested in - Rugby Union isn't one of them - even if this bloke was the lead story i would have more than likely ignored it as it was of no interest to me, same with the sports news on TV when i watch it i take notice of what is of interest to me and ignore the bits that aren't.
I am not having a dig at Rugby Union as a sport or the people who have an interest in this sport, i am not denying it is a big sport in this country and that lots of people watch it and follow it thats their choice i just dont understand why it has become such a big issue because i genuinely haven't heard of this guy !!.

So it was the rovers supporters group who saved your club? you sure? how much money did they pump in then, exactly? The reality is you overextended yourselves, filled your team with aussies (all the things you give us stick for) and now you are in trouble but hey stick you head in the sand and waste your time trolling my club.
And don't give me any crocodile tears for us south wales fans because you were just as much an anti-crusaders bore before the move.
Widnes are a great team who i have a lot of respect for and even the most upset widnes fan hasn't been as much of an as you.

Nope, I'd never heard of him either. In Leigh/w*gan (and i'm sure many other areas too) most people don't care about union so they don't talk about it. If i'm looking up sports news i'll go straight to the RL section. I did hear about this guy when it was in the news that he had 'come out' but I had no interest so I didn't pay attention and if you'd have asked me 5 minutes later what his name was I'd have already forgotten. Only union players I know are Wilkinson, Johnson, O'Driscoll and the big french guy with a beard. Why is it so hard to believe that people wouldn't have heard of this guy? Is he supposed to be really well known in the UK?

oh right , so after 8 years on this site, nearly 7,000 posts and generally not having a problem with anyone in that time i now decide i am gonna troll by simply asking people to inform me who a potential signing for one of the Super League clubs is i as haven't heard of him before as i dont follow the sport he plays..........blimey remind me never to post on any topic or dare to ask a question on something i am not too clued up on again ......in future i shall mind my own business then if it doesn't concern my club or it isn't something i know lots about !!
pardon me for taking an interest in something that could be happening in my favourite sport icon_frustrated.gif icon_frustrated.gif

Could have sworn this is the Virtual Terrace rather then the Crusaders forum. eusa_think.gif

End of the day Rovers are a long-standing traditional RL club, who, like many promoted teams have had to spend beyond the means to survive in SL, but many clubs in SL have had to do the same at some point since it's inception.

Have no time for the Crusaders because I don't see what you will bring to SL (certainly will never contribute to other clubs coffers I know that).

If they prove me wrong though and are a success I will (as with Les Catalans) admit to been partly wrong, but can't see it been any more of a success in Wrexham then it was in Bridgend.

icon_smile.gif

(the fact you're resorting to publicity stunts already doesn't bode well IMO icon_wink.gif icon_smile.gif ).

I'd heard the name, but had no idea of his achievements - including his coming out - before this happened, so I don't find it hard to believe that Daz had never heard about him at all.
