I thought that 'Pom' was an acronym for 'Prisoner of his Majesty' which was stamped on the clothes of the convicts that landed in Australia. The locals referred to the arrivals, from England, as Poms meaning that the term is a reference to, er, other Australians.

To be fair - there's only two of them - League Freak and McKenzie. Neither of them are Rugby League fans in the true sense of the word.
