| Quote: bren2k "The standing leg (or 'Wigan') tackle does need to be more severely dealt with, but only *after* the offending player has been summarily dismissed from the field of play; it's the cop-out 'on report' that starts all the trouble and gives an advantage to other teams. I would have nothing against any subsequent ban including the next game vs the team against which the offence was committed, but a lot of the outrage would be snuffed out if ref's were empowered to grow a pair.'"
I have come to the conclusion that the decision has been made to not send players off because of the massive detriment that is, so that ‘technical’ fouls on the person like this, like the high tackle, like the chicken wing etc, are to be dealt with on-report which doesn’t ‘ruin the spectacle’ of that game, but does have a punishment to deter players. Violent conduct however is still a sending off.
I dont think its about 'growing a pair' i think it is more a policy decision to keep players on the field.
Im in two minds about that as a situation but im sure that is what we are dealing with.

You could well be right and I hadn't thought about it like that; if you are right however, it's a stupid policy and one that coaches and players will exploit ruthlessly.
The integrity of the 'spectacle' should not trump player welfare, in my humble opinion.

Good to see this finally happening and I just hope they continue to carry it out and not just throw a few heavy bans around in the first couple of weeks. Wigan will be gutted, emergency meeting tonight at the DW. Better take those 'snap the pole' posters down.
Long overdue this. My only worry is that they'll invent some new moves. The crocodile death roll for example.'"
Is that report to me suggesting shoulder charges that make no contact with the head are allowed?

You're mistaken. That is only a distraction from Saddened's main obsession; bagging Paul Wellens at every opportunity. I'm only surprised he hasn't managed to shoehorn him into is topic ... yet.

I took in a few of their training sessions in off season, wane has been schemeing and they have an all new set of moves.
The japanese twist and snap ankle shredder looked particulaly potent. They all looked as happy as a pig in sh*t, which is quite an apt discription for that disgusting entity.

Possibly so. As I say, im in too minds about it because whilst I agree with everything you have put, I also think that a sending off is of such a huge detriment to a side, more often than not ending the game as a spectacle and a contest, does the offence justify it. Maybe it would be better to look at a punishment somewhere between 10mins and a full game. Id also add that the level of punishment makes the ref more reticent to use it, so even insisting on a red doesn’t really mean they are likely to use it as often as they should.
I’ve said it before in fact that if all high tackles resulted in 5mins in the bin (unless of course they are ‘red card worthy’), we would see them far less. Perhaps if we saw these technical fouls on the person punished with 20mins in the bin as well as being put on report, it would mean refs would use it and coaches would soon be on top of players who are missing a quarter of the game

its just a penalty as it was last season, you don't get banned for a shoulder charge but you do if it makes contact to the head.

They should do away with the going on report fiasco, instead send the player off, if it warrants putting on report, for the rest of the game, but let the said team put a sub on in his place, leaving only 3 subs. Then if the player gets found not guilty at the hearing his team does not suffer from his actions in that game.

| Just need a simple tweak:
If an individual player is put on report then he should also automatically get 10 minutes in the sin bin.

Behind the tongue in cheek exagerations, do you not think there is an issue with this? The tactic of aggressively attacking the knee joint of the standing leg was without doubt coached at Wigan. It's an cynical act and completely outside of the culture of our sport. This clampdown is long overdue.

The point of on report is if a ref suspects serious foul play may have taken place but isn't sure enough to hand out an immidiate punishment. It would be very unfair to sin bin a player who has done nothing wrong.
They should scrap the on report as it is pointless and all games are reviewed anyway.
