I know we don't see usually eye to eye dm but I have to agree with you.
The 4 nations final was RL at it's finest, tough skill, passion it had everything and even a little bit of biff which is always good.

| Quote: gutterfax "After spending 12 months getting branded a Union Troll or some other inane name by the children on The NRL board, all I did was use the same tactics as the schoolyard bullies who used to post here, got banned, somehow got back on and continue as before.
Fact remains that statistics can be used to suit any argument....and in the case above, I simply responded to Old Dears statement that NRL attracts more fans than S14 rugby in Australia. It does....., but when you divide by the number of games played over the season...it doesn't. I am fully aware that S14 franchises represent massive catchment areas and NRL teams represent Sydney Suburbs/Towns...I simply answered the statement as it was made. Factually...with no need for spin, or a link to the SMH.COM.AU or a history lesson. Simple fact is that Union, regardless of how boring it is or if it's played by public schoolboys, got more average fans, in Australia, per game in 2010 than the NRL.
I have no beef with you Dunbar.....believe it or not, I am a RL fan and a very passionate one at that, but the trolls who polute these boards used to confine themselves to the NRL board.....now that they have driven any decent posters away from there, they are now trying to infect the VT. They pride themselve on being able to state what RL's next TV deal will be worth...they jump on anyone who has a different opinion and they resort to the PM messaging route to try and goad people into spats.....I suggest you stay well away lest you get tarred with the same brush as them.'"
Fair enough... it looks like I have parachuted into a long term feud here then
All I saw was an interesting interpretation of the figures (i.e. American football gets one 80k crowd a year in the UK with the Wembley NFL game and this would provide a higher average attendance than the Premier league... lies, Dammed lies and statistics I guess)
For what it’s worth, my interpretation of the Union vs. League popularity is that many people I have spoken to are raving about the England vs. Australia game at the weekend saying it is the best game of Rugby (Union they mean) they have seen in years. What is interesting about that game is that it had minimum scrums and the ball was in play for a lot longer than a typical Union game (in fact, the real tedious element was the ridiculous lineout’s)
Essentially, the best game of Rugby Union this year was a running and handling match... exactly what we love about our sport
Rugby League is Rugby Union evolved over a 100 years... Union is now going through the same evolution only quicker due to TV pressures etc
The challenge they have is how do they make their game consistently more attractive to watch and exciting without admitting that League was right all along... I’m looking forward to finding out

I didn’t watch the Scotland game. However the England RU (even when we lost to All Blacks) matches of recent have been better than the international RL matches. Ok this is just my opinion, but I’m someone who used to watch as many rugby league matches as possible until the standard declined to what it is today. When the alarm rang for Australia v PNG I decided not to get up and the same goes for NZ v PNG. I only watched England RL games out of loyalty and Australia v NZ because there the best that rugby league has to offer.
I’ve seen better clashes between Australia and New Zealand in the last ten years. Maybe I've been spoilt or I'm just romanticising the past. But even with my own team Leeds Rhinos - they’ve gone from a team that was a joy to watch playing to a team that’s almost unrecognisable now even though we’ve more a less got the same personnel apart from a different coach.
Manly Sea Eagles of 2007/2008 was the last time that made me go WOW.

Back on Thread...........
The Kiwis 3rd win over the Roos in 5 years, whilst brilliant for the game in NZ, does not signal the start of League rivaling Union in New Zealand. Australians need to try to understand the global picture of sport, where League sits and the simple fact that Union is the bigger international and domestic code wherever the 2 meet, except in PNG and Australia.
Failure to comprehend this just shows up the idiots like Old Dear and Dull Messenger for what they are....narrow minded and bereft of any understanding of anything that isn't VB or Holdens

Not a feud...just them failing to undersatand that it isn't criminal to watch any sport other than League......and I agree, stats can be manipulated to suit.......I agree that the NRL gets more fans through the turnstiles than S14 does in Australia...only a fool would think that Union is a "bigger" sport than League in Australia and I have no doubt that the willy inaccurate TV viewing figures still show that the appetite for League in Australia is greater than that for Union..........problem is, I am also aware of the lie of the land iin: England, New Zealand, France and anywhere else the games go head to head.......something some of our little criminal cousins (no offence meant dunbar) have trouble getting to grips with

I suppose forums are like visits to the bathrooms. Producing a thread is akin to producing a pooh. On forums people admire and talk about pooh for a long time. It takes a couple of people to flush it down the toilet. This thread is now in the sewers.

NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg |

| Until NZRL get sorted out, the jnr game and amateur game is grown nationally in NZ, they get a 2nd NRL team and the NRL invests the millions it takes out of the country back into the country it will never, ever, have a hope of knocking over RU.
