| He is the ultimate Mr Fix It.
Named at loose, hooker gets injured, Whiting can cover it. Named at centre, two props down, stick Whiting in the front row. Our top 2 goal kickers are unavailable, yea Rich will do it.
But the impressive thing about him is he doesn't just fill a gap and muddle through, he knows every position inside out and plays like he has spent all his career there wherever you put him. It's a shame he's got lead boots, he would be an awesome player if he had a bit of pace too.

It is just that pace that holds him back from being an international IMO. I worried for Hull yesterday when I saw him going to fullback tbh but he certainly did a grand job. I thought he may get caught out for pace but he seems to just use his know how and experience to get him in the right positions. If he'd had a little bit more pace in attack a couple of times he'd have been away. You managed to open up some big holes down Wires left hand side at times.

Judging him on his time at Hull, I thought he did ok for us. Remember him filling in at half back against KR last year and had a stormer.
Think the problem with McGoldrick is he gets easily wound up rather then keeping composed.
Another name to throw into the hat would be Jon Wilkin who seems to have no problem moving from the back row to the halves should Saints require him to. How many positions has Ratchford played ? Seem to remember him at Centre, stand off , scrum half and full back.
Players like this must really make the difference on a clubs salary cap, one players wage as opposed to four or five players wages.

At Hull FC we have one Richard Whiting, who today played full back in a semi final and despite the interception had an awesome game. He slowly is beccomming an FC legend and has played in every position for the club.
Whilst in the past supporters have preferred players who dominate in one position I think the utility man is now a given in the modern day.'"
I thought Whiting already was an FC legend? He has been in my book for about 3 years anyway.

| Was going to mention Ratchford, played in almost every backline position and does far more than just fill in no matter where he plays. I'd have him in the England squad and probably on the bench, especially if we are going to play Sinfield at 6.

| Lee Smith was pretty versatile for Leeds pre-union and used to do a more than decent job wherever he played. Haven't seen as much of him since he went to Wakey, is he an out-and-out centre these days?

He's played a few positions but I'd say centre is his best for us.
Played at Fullback but didn't have a great time, played at Stand-Off a few times with mixed results.

| Never forget Whiting scoring a full length try against Wakey a year or 2 back. Took everybody by surprise, probably himself more then anybody else.

My thoughts exactly, another yard of pace and he'd comfortably make the England squad.

My second favourite ever try after Cookies in the Cup Final, it was in Agar's last year so 2 years ago.
Tom Briscoe also scored an awesome try that day, started with a Phelps kick return and we went the length after about 8 or 9 passes.

| Always good to have one, and I haven't always rated Whiting admittedly, but the more you watch him the more you realise what a tremendous job he does for Hull wherever they play him.
For Leeds Zak Hardaker is invaluable as he can play any position from 1-7. As has been mentioned, Ablett has decent utility value too.

| Whiting is really the only name that comes to my mind when you see a thread title like this. He is [ithe[/i utility man. Many players can muddle through and fill the gaps but there's only Whiting with whom I'd be wholly confident. I've nothing but respect for him as a player.

Me too, he's played every position for us, and apart from hooker he's probably started games in all of them too, and played well too.
I might be wrong, but didn't Ben Cocayne play every position for Rovers whilst he was there as well?

| Hull will get another Utility man next year, Jordan Thompson, Full Back, Winger in the juniors, second row, centre probably a stint at 13 too in the first team. A poor mans Rich Whiting though, Whiting has a touch of class in attack and D, JT doesn't have that though, in my opinion.
