Eden went over to Australia a bang average player & came back a bang average player, he's far from international standard

The same Manfredi who is only an inch taller but 9lbs lighter than Eden?

Ok, sure thing.'"

Players weights on the internet are not accurate at all.

I'd take any bang average player who can score 34 tries in 22 games.
His pace, timing and finishing make him the best attacking winger in SL. His kick returns are good too.
Defensively he hasn't missed many tackles. His weakness is under the high ball.
He is the best English winger around this year.

Yeah but because he was rubbish 5 years ago and Hall was good 5 years ago, that's all that matters when it comes to internationals.

The "logic" in this thread about sums this place up.

I brought Manfredi up but not in comparison to Eden but I don't think It's much about actual size but more physicality and how you use your size. They're probably both a similar height/weight but Manfredi is freakishly strong and is an absolute nightmare to pull down. There's more then one way to skin a cat though and whilst Edens style of play is different, it's certainly no less effective at superleague level although at international level I'm not as sure.

It's a pointless debate though more then likely as Manfredi won't have enough time to force his way in. I'd have thought if Eden is fit he'll get a place as back up winger.

Quote: nottinghamtiger "Eden back in about four weeks.
Surely a certainty for left wing?
A left edge of Gale, Hardaker, Shenton and Eden gives England the best chance of success. I'd also be tempted to run McMeekan in that side (he plays on the right edge for Cas).
They might not be the best individually (though they might be) but the advantage of playing together successfully all season surely counts for something?'"

Not really because Powell isn't the England coach, Wayne Bennett is and the contrast in styles is miles apart. No point picking players is you're going to ask them to play a style that won't suit them.

Eden looked like a junior against men when he played for the Broncos last year. Very similar issues to Hardaker at the Panthers, and from what I've seen so far Sargison as well. Burgess started off with the same issues but by the end of the year looked much better. Basically they all struggle with how strong their opponents are and how hard they need to tackle and will get tackled.

I'll give Hardaker the benefit of the doubt, as he went over in terrible shape last year and seems to relish the tough stuff usually, but the wingers in particular can expect to have to field kicks under massive pressure and face a kick chase that will try to bury them. Wingers who love that kind of thing will do well. Those that try to avoid heavy contact will get found out. Its that simple.

But then surely the coach should be demanding our players are hammering the kicker every single time (in a legal way). Tackling the kicker full on as he's getting the kick away/exposed is one way to slow them down/put doubt in their minds or even feel the need to pass it on instead of taking the kick or forces the kick to be poor/ill-timed and thus runners are offside/having to check their run.
Most of the half d efforts in SL are pathetic and put no pressure on the kickers whatsoever, or are so lame it's a lame attempt at blocking the kicker after the ball has gone and the kicker has had a toke and a brew before the defender got there. Time the tackle properly, sure you might get stepped the odd occasion, sure the ball might end up putting the wingers in a spot of bother but if the halfback is getting crunched (legally) more often than not, that does have a big effect no matter what level you're at.

Out of curiosity, if a runner is in an offside position and the ref states to keep 10m and the catcher does not move/move 10 metres is the rule still that the offside player still has to remain 10 metres from the catch/wait for the catcher to make 10 metres before engaging?

Eden would be the first English winger on the team sheet if the team played an expansive game for me. He seems so much faster than before he went to Oz. I couldnt believe it was him scoring against Wigan in the WCC. The issue is Bennetts conservative style, which has been the case for the England team for years. When was the last time we created space for a winger to score from 60/70 metres out wide? Hall certainly doesnt have the pace to finish that at international level, perhaps McGilvary does. So when your wingers job is to strat the set on the front foot we need Hall and McGilvary. I cant see Bennett changing the way we play to accomodate Eden. But I do think some of the comments about him only scoring them try's because hes on Cas left edge is not govong him enough credit for the all round improvement in his game to enable him to do it

Eden is suspect defensively, so Hall gets it because of the way international RL is played.

Well its safe to say none of the Aussies will run around Ryan Hall...it'll take too much time.

Cas fans wont be happy with that. No McShane or Eden or Hardaker (although I'd have Hardaker in) icon_biggrin.gif

Currie at centre? Not saying the lad can't play there because I believe he has and done well but after a year out and facing Middle 8's opposition now it'd be a big ask to take him at all let alone at centre against Aussies and Kiwis.
