| I hope the RFL let Bradford play in this million pound match....they need every penny they can get their hands on.

| Quote: SmokeyTA "It was an awful match, loads of dropped balls, most tries coming from huge errors, two teams absolutely terrified to try anything attackingwise and stifled by fear. It was a game Cas lost by being the poorer team, not won Wakefield won by being the better team
If that game was played last year, it would have been held up as an example of everything wrong with franchising, teams not really trying, mediocrity blah blah. It was just a terrible terrible match.
interesting that two posters mention that they remember the run and the excitement, how it grabbed attention, you even speculate it was a distraction from the battle at the top facts are that whilst that game got a decent attendance, the games around it were awful and very few watched.
The home game before Wakefield got only 5.5k against Leeds (for comparison Wakefield attendances v Leeds in the franchise era have been 10k, 9.5k, 8.7k, 9.7k and 6.4k in 2009 which was a rearranged Wednesday night fixture), 3.3k against Les Catalans, 4k v Bradford and 5k v Saints.
Its surprising so many remember Wakefields run for survival because very few people actually watched it and i can't imagine that being all that much of a distraction from the top.'"
Smokey, you are talking utter rubbish and I would politely suggest that you are in a minority RL fans.
Nobody is saying that it was SOO quality or intensity but, for such a poor game and spectacle, plenty of people seem
to have a different memory to your own.
As I said, this was a bottom vs 2nd bottom, what do you really expect.
You say that it wasn't much of a distraction but, especially with you being from this side of the Pennines, you have managed "Likely Lads" media evasion to avoid the coverage that this game received.
We have had a number of lop sided GF results, where TV viewers would have turned over and even a world cup final this year where it was no contest and the "Million Pound Game" provided better entertainment than these.

It was 3rd bottom v 2nd bottom.
Catalans were exempt from relegation.
And Wigan were... erm... icon... whoops... I mean too high profile a club to be allowed to taste relegation

Yet fewer people watched it in person, and on TV.
You can keep repeating these things but there is evidence out there proving you wrong, this game wasn’t some huge game that had a massive build up and media saturation. It simply wasn’t watched by that many people in person, and wasn’t even the best watched match on TV that season never mind some sort of record breaking game.
The facts are, one game sold out a relatively small stadium, the games around that game were very poorly attended, far more people watched the GF and many other matches that season in both person and on tv.
And it was a poor quality game between two poor teams, which you yourself admit you just make the excuse that these were two poor teams so we should expect a poor game. I don’t disagree with that, I just don’t think we should ignore the fact it was a particularly poor game just because we already knew they were two poor teams.

Of course the Wakefield game was watched cy 11,000, plus a few on nearby rooftops and the GF and World Cup Final took place in larger stadiums.
I was trying to compare the entertainment value.
Certain "better quality" games don't live up to their billing and are a turn off for the TV viewer and spectators.
This game, despite its "poor quality" was no such game, even though you maintain it was poor viewing.
Looks like I will have to accept whatever you tell me Smokey, of course we cant both be right.

You may have thought it was a great game, tense and exciting because your clubs life depended on it. If you didnt care who went down, it was god awful.
Im sure watching a paint drying race would be exciting if my life depended on one outcome, but for the neutral it would still be an awful spectacle.

| it was billed as the million pound match as it was pure chance the two teams in the relegation battle were drawn together on the last day of the season, this year it could all be cut & dried 4 or 5 weeks before the season ends.

A bit like the two Hull FC play off games against against Catalan and Hudds last year then or Saints against Hull KR.
I know which game i would rather be watching.

The Million Pound Match will happen every year from 2015 under the new structure. Final table of the middle 8; 4th v 5th - winner in Super League the next season.
Wonder anyway what SmokeyTA (a Leeds supporter) was doing at a bottom of the table match Wakefield v Cas (especially as it was on TV). Could have left space for another Cas/Wakey fan to get in.

You really are a typical rhino, still banging on about something even when your opponent (me) has admitted defeat.
We just have to agree that out taste in RL is different, thank goodness.
Btw, I never said it was a great game but, that it had plenty of drama !

| To respond to the OP.
Such a rule change would need to be ratified by the SL clubs, like all other rules. Given we have already had round 1, a change in operational rules this late would be so far from being possible that it's not really a serious consideration.
Changing the rules to possibly relegate 3 teams this year is not really going to happen in any world.

Correct.
I suspect that it will always involve a SL team and a Championship team, with the side that has a bigger salary cap and more overseas players coming out on top.

I take it you don't remember the 1994-95 season?
The rules were changed mid-season to relegate the bottom 6 from the top division in order to prepare for a Super League competition in 1996.
Bull could happen in this game at any time.
The history of the game is inundated with examples of defecation.

Fair enough regarding it being too late to consider it, I suppose.
As for 'changing the rules to possibly relegate 3 teams this year', I've no idea what you're taking about.
