Hi guys,
So after hearing a few people discussing this concept - I wrote an article on the 18th man about it. (Link Below)

Just interested to see what other people think regarding bringing it back?
Cheers

| Ive always supported bringing it back. I think now that international rl is getting a bit more exposure and more regular scheduling and attendances seem to be increasing, another representative competition would be a welcome addition. I recall a reporter on the news during the NZ series saying that union had played 16 games that year and football 10 and he was being quite snotty about how we had only played the friendly against France. Well we might not play loads of internationals but a 3 game representative series would fill that hole.
Follow the same format as state of origin. One game in each county and maybe a neutral one, perfect game to take to development areas and really market it as a clash of the old enemies, get neutrals picking allegiances and what have you. No need to get to bothered about attendances, I think anything more than regular domestic games would be successful, say a game at DW, one at Kcom (as we call our place now) and the one on the road at like Olympic. Discount tickets for Olympic and clubs could offer free travel to get a lot of us down there as well as curious bystanders in. Anything close to the international attendance of 40,000 would be great. 20 in the first two grounds, 40 in third, average of what? About 26-27,000 would be a massive event and would get our game some serious exposure.
And it is something that other sports in this country don't have so would be an exciting unique event. Yorkshire!!
(I will point out that I picked those venues as examples, obviously rotate the grounds every year)

| Let's keep looking back and keep the game in 2 counties as that's a successful sport model
It failed when the game was big in the Pennies why will it work now?

| I think we should argue strenuously for it to return then not to the games, just like all the other times.

| I would guess that in general fans on one side of the pennines (the side where fans regularly chant their counties name regardless of the club that they support) will be far more in favour than fans on the better side where none of the SL clubs are even in the county.

| Should hype it up to the max, and test the water by selling the TV rights to ITV as 3 game series. Get rid of the magic weekend and replace it with one of the games to be played neutral in the Newcastle and Midlands areas, also include an u/19s counties game pre main event.

Indeed.. when was the last time you heard fans of Saints/Wigan/Wire et al chanting Lancashire? In fact, even the good people of Yorkshire couldn't get up for it before it was scrapped - see the paltry attendances for yourself here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugby_Lea ... _the_Roses
Here's a wacky idea, how about we improve our international team (England) by playing a full international mid season with another international team (France) and stop trying to revive dead and buried fixtures from the bygone past.

| People from Yorkshire tend to show a great deal of pride in coming from Yorkshire.
However, that's not as evident in people from other counties. They're more likely to identify with their town rather than the region. Which is why I think the roses clash never really took off as a thing

| I never understood why when we are so quick to praise the Auissie game, set up etc etc we haven't had a proper crack at trying to emulate its most marketed event.
I also agree with people who say we need more international games, not only to build the game, but I think it would force clubs to carry bigger squads and afford youngsters more game time if they were without their players for 4 weeks in midseason.

It's only dead and buried because we (as a sport) crippled it and then took it out to the woodshed.
Why not do both?
Why not play regular internationals v both France & Wales and play a 3 game Roses series? The sport is crying out for something different in the season rather than just yet another SL game between the same old teams.

"Emulating Origin will help us to compete with the Aussies" - this type of discussion happens literally every year. You people are utter morons. Did someone really suggest bringing back some "war of the roses" nonsense to replace the Magic Weekend, which is one of the best events in the season and generates a huge income and profile boost for the sport?

Why is it a waste of time getting 2 sets of top English players playing against each other?

Because as pointed out the whole Lancashire/Yorkshire thing is no longer representative of the structure of the sport and makes the game look parochial and focused on the past. Plus the last time we had this competition nobody bothered to go to games.
Theoretically you could come up with a similar competition with a different theme, but which games would you drop to squeeze it in to an already pretty crowded schedule?
