How about holding the RL World Cup every two years - alternating between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres?

Most seem agreed that RL needs to focus more on international football to help the game grow. Some have suggested good international calendars.

But a World Cup every two years would be easy to understand. In the intervening years, there could be a qualifying competiton for the 'lesser' nations - which would help increase participation in the game.

No, the amount of time between is what makes the tournament seem special.

4/5 years with at least 4 groups of 4 with the top 2 going through, don't know why they didn't do that this year.

Top 4 highest ranking teams seeded and put into separate groups and the rest randomised into those groups, would really be any different to what we have now except groups c and d would have 2 teams going through instead of 1, and their still would have been close games and tonkings.

It would make a lot of sense from an organisational point of view because we don't have any other model that brings in the minnow teams that makes money enough to pay for the cost of putting on games.
If we could play the world cup every two years and a four nations and WC qualifiers in the in between years we would have our international calendar sorted.

That's it. Agreed.

Regarding Headhunter's point, I don't think being held every two years would devalue the World Cup.

Clearly committed RL supporters would know it was happening - but for everybody else, it would still feel like it was every four years i.e. when it was in their part of the world. Plus, those RL supporters who used to like to travel down under & vice versa every four years for internationals could return to doing just that.

Or 3 years with qualifiers and a four nations or maybe a rl 6 nations with England, Wales, Ireland, France, Scotland and Italy, it's getting the teams to release players for the games.

4 years is fine, especially since we've now made the good move of moving it to a year where there are no other major sports events.

what does need to happen however is a good and consistent schedule of 4 Nations and GB Tours in between.

we just need consistency of a simple schedule.

we should keep this 4 year cycle we are now starting - 2017, 2021, 2025 because it avoids other major events.

It avoids soccer euro's and world cup, it avoids olympics and it avoids RU world cup.

We haven't even finished this one and you want to change the format.
Lets stick to what we have for now.

Every 4 years is fine. By all means have individual test matches in between

NO NO NO.

Every four years from now until the end of time. A consistent calendar is what we need, and every four years is the perfect time frame.

WC should be every 4 years but there needs to be a proper international calendar that includes the smaller nations.

In a 4 year cycle there needs to be a 4 nations type tournament, a tour and a WC, that leaves a free year where we could repeat a tour or 4 nations tour or do something different.

Theres no real reason why England/NZ/OZ couldn’t tour the pacific island nations. Im sure the Samoan/Tongan/PNG or Fijian governments/tourist boards would be massively on board for a showcase of their nations and I can’t see many England players passing up that opportunity to spend 6 weeks on those islands. I think England playing Fiji, in Fiji would be huge for RL there.

Similarly people have asked if England/GB tour Australia what would NZ do (and vice/versa) the answer would be to play some of the emerging nations.

The only year where the emerging nations wouldn’t be playing the top nations would be the 4 nations type competition year, in which I would run the WC qualifying competitions. We have a 14 nations WC, 3 would qualify in England, Aus and NZ, then we would have 11 places to fill. 4 Southern Hemisphere teams to qualify, 4 European nations to qualify, 1 North American nation to qualify. Then a competition for the other 2 places between the 5th and 6th nations in the southern hemisphere and Europe, plus the 2nd nation in north America and everyone else (i.e SA, Lebanon anyone else who wants to try that isn’t in Europe, NA or SH)
