would it really be that bad for rugby league in this country if we got rid of the salary cap?

the richest, 'biggest' clubs already have the best players and pull away at the top (4,5 teams)

is it such a bad thing that all clubs are left with an open cheque book to run themselves as they see fit?

Yep

Not just RL clubs , all sports clubs , perfectly sensible businessmen leave their brains behind when getting involved in pro sports clubs , it's a well known fact icon_lol.gif

It'd be terrible because you'd get teams like Warrington just buying any and every player they thought was good enough to offer some sort of threat to them and it would just take away from the competition completely.

I'd like to see it got rid of [restriction of earning power and all that].but at the end of the day it would be completely irelevent to the sl as it would be the same teams at the top and the same teams at the bottom anyway.

Well, we'd go back to a similar period when Wigan were the only pro club and bought up the best players leaving the rest of the league to struggle on. Admittedly you'd now have maybe 4 clubs who'd be in that position, but how is that going to help improve the sport? Given that the rest of the league would be on for a kicking off those sides who can afford to stockpile players and that would take a bat to those clubs without money as they'd lose fans and probably sponsorship so they'd likely have to go to semi-pro status. So you devalue the competition as well as mean that the competitiveness of the league drops as well

Dont start me off................

Had this very arguement with someone the other day.

IMO it would be the best thing ever happened to the sport.

He's probably sick of seeing the cap looking after little clubs, like it has done for years now, every club has had enough time to be financially secure now and should be able to stand on there own two feet, why should clubs like Wigan, Warrington, Leeds etc have to suffer.

Despite supporting a team that would no doubt benefit from the the salary cap been abolished, I sincerley hope it doesn't. The difference between the top and the bottom is already too big, the only way to get a decent, competitive league (like the NRL) is if the gap between bottom and top is minimal. As more and more teams begin to spend up to cap, this is starting to work, ending the cap now would be stupid and lead to times like the 90s with one team dominating.

depends what it was replaced with. There would be any number of possible outcomes dependent on many different factors. Though an outright collapse simply wouldnt happen, regardless of some peoples scaremongering.

There have been some stupid ideas on here lately.

Abolish the overseas quota and now abolish the cap. Some people must have a bit too much time on their hands
