| Good to see. I would love to see a PNG team in the NRL, I think they are so deserving of it. But where would they play and where would the money required to run it come from?

Probably in Port Moresby
www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/leag ... -ryot.html
That article combined with the NRL tv deal should cover the finances too.
All RL needs now is teams in Samoa, Tonga, Ireland and Scotland and in 5 to 10 years time we might have some sort of international game.

39110_1363272058.jpg Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go
-
Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know

| I got shot down for saying this should happen on here.
They love RL and that stadium would be full every week as long as they keep ticket prices at a decent level.
Huge step for the game and surely PNG will be just as good if not better than England after some time.
Maybe we need Tonga, Samoa and Fiji to get a club now to grow the game down under.
They won't struggle for talent in PNG, so many people play the game, once they get their scouting system working efficiently they will have a quality team.
If they do pull off this 30k stadium then I would to see Origin played there and some more international fixtures, it would be amazing for the game.

| Even in the World Cup when they were getting battered off everyone, they were still enjoyable to watch. Some of the shots they put on! Youtube will be full of them in no time!

As much as the sentiment is appreciated some people are living in cloud cuckoo land. Plonk a team in scotland or ireland and we're at the most 10 years away and perhaps only five years away from having a proper international scene? We have no real presence in either country.

It's not really comparable since it's a lot easier to be at least competitive in Union than in League simply due to the nature of the game.

| They should have started with a team in the Qld Cup years ago. I would love to see it happen, but if it were to happen next season for example, would there be a single local player in the team (if it were to be an NRL standard team)????

70+ years it would seem.
But, as has been pointed out, modern RL rewards excellence more than does RU so it may be a century or more before Ireland and Scotland can aspire to play at the elite level.
Still, it's something to work towards and patience is a virtue.

| There is no point in getting all excited and misty eyed about the thought of an NRL franchise getting the go ahead in Port Moresby anytime in the next 20 years.... if ever.
Ok so you may get many thousands turning up to watch a game there but Port Moresby itself is little more than a poverty stricken crime ridden slum. This place makes places like Leeds, Hull and Bradford look like paradise.
The whole country itself is on its knees and has been voted one of the worst places in the world to live. No mean feat when you consider some of the hell holes there are around this planet. I read a story somewhere that Stanley Genes village had no electricity until 2005. Rapes and murders in PM are a way of life.
The only way a PNG side will get an NRL franchise is if they play their games somewhere like Cairns or Townsville... and then lets be honest... it's not REALLY a PNG side is it.
Forget this stupid idea and move on.

| Agreed. PNG won't ever be able to support an NRL team and neither will the island nations. It's a shame but that's the way it is. The best thing would be for NRL clubs to open up RL academies and scouting networks in these places. The Jamaica RL are trying to set up a similar thing at the moment. What these nations would benefit from would be regular home international fixtures.

| I agree with Bazza. Everytime I hear about a match in PNG there's reports of violence and crowd trouble and I'm recollecting reports going back to the eighties.
