| if you don't get anything closer but the Premier Inn in Aberdare is £115 for a double for two nights, 45 minutes on train (10 minute walk from hotel and £6 return with return trains till 10.40pm) There's a few in Swansea which is about 1 hour on train and 8.60 return. If you need any info. on places etc please let me know.

| Avoid Aberdare (commonly known as the anus of the universe) and indeed anywhere else in the Cynon Valley. Generally people who stumble across remote villages and towns around the area never leave. Avoid it at all costs. Popular pastimes for the locals involve stabbing and killing wild bears and then blaming the people from over the Rhondda for it.
The whole of that part of South Wales is steeped in history. Aberdare itself was first created when a genetic experiment went horribly wrong. For a while, there was a dark cloud of coal dust covering the area where no human life could grow. Legend has it that just two humans (a brother and sister) survived and re-populated the entire area from Blaengwrach to Abercynon. The traditional Aberdare males mating call of 'Myfanawy? Get by ya now' is still used to this day
The battle cry of people from Aberdare is "Not frumm round by ya are ya butt?"
After hearing this sound (usually screamed at you by a fat woman with dyed hair wearing leggings who looks like she has been tangoed or an even fatter bloke wearing an Ospreys or Cardiff City shirt with disproportionately short legs compared to the length of his body) expect to be smashed in the face by one of these semi humanoid beings. He or she will also be clutching a can of cheap lager in its fake gold sovereign ring covered tattooed fists as all the pubs round there sell cans ('cos they are cheaper see innit butt')
Enjoy Millenium Magic wont you.
Or as the ticket inspectors on the 8:30 am intercity service from Aberdare to Cardiff central will say 'Ave a fkn TIDY* time in Caaaaa-diffff butty'
Just before they punch you in the face for being English.
*Tidy is a phrase used by Aberdarians roughly translated into English as 'good'

Quite a knowledgeable post until you mentioned Aberdare has become a city. Are you a local?
Funny how this incarnation is still working for you.

The inter 'city' bit was said with tongue very firmly in cheek.
I was a local around the Cynon valley once upon a time.

Just spotted that.
What's the nightlife like around Newport?
And if it's cr*p, how much do you reckon a taxi back at 4am from Cardiff would cost?!

It's a typical Welsh night out.
After 11pm all the locals congregate around Bridge st or Railway st where they engage in quaint Welsh activities such as urinating in shop doorways, vomiting on their girlfriends, vomiting in their girlfriends, and fighting with anyone from outside Newport.

No. It just means that camping isn't an option this year, and Cardiff has very few hotels/hostels!

| There seemed to be a fair amount available when I booked yesterday (albeit not at the cheap end, and a number of rooms were advertised as 'last room of this type available in this hotel."

You were robbed.
And getting to Cardiff city centre from Rhoose is a bit of pain at times.
