| News this wek that the final hurdle had been overcome to the redevelopment of NIB stadium. Work will commence on a brand new $82million main stand next year and will be ready for teh Reds kick off in 2013!
The council last night unanimously accepted an offer from the Government for a 50-year lease, which The West Australian understands includes a $5 million upfront payment followed by $25,000 a year for the remainder of the lease indexed at CPI.
The Government included $82.5 million in the May Budget to build a new eastern stand but it wanted to control the process, including the design.
He said the development would enhance the chances of the WA Rugby League’s continuing bid for an NRL licence for Perth. As part of the heads of agreement between the council and Government new deals will also have to renegotiated with major tenants Western Force, Perth Glory and WA Rugby League.
The Government included $82.5 million in the May Budget to upgrade nib Stadium.
Under the deal with the council it will have total control over the design and rebuild of the stadium.'"

Bit of a bugger to get to games when you are living on the east coast.
Its not like you can just hop in the car and shoot off to Perth if your team is playing there and you are bored at home.
Its about 5 hours on a plane to get to Perth from Sydney! No idea how much a return ticket is these days but I bet you wouldnt get much change from 500 bucks. Thats an exy trip if you are taking the kids/girlfriend/boyfriend etc etc. And it would be sensible to have the night there and fly back the next day... so you are probably looking at about $100-150 for a reasonable hotel room on top of the cost of your flights and match ticket.
I think if Perth got an NRL club it would be a similar situation to the Storm. Its popular with the genuine footy fans but will never have the muscle to take over from AFL in WA.
Despite Perth being one of Barry McKenzies favourite cities... in my opinion its not an ideal location for a new NRL side. The Perth Western Reds or whatever they were called couldnt make a go of it in the SL days... cant see it working second time round either

About $100 change. Your probably spot on for the hotel though.
They don't need to out muscle the AFL boy's just create a niche market where 13000 people turn up to their home games every weekend and I think the NRL will consider it a success. That's all the Storm has done.

I like Perth.. Id like it to be a success. I think a lot of it would depend on them getting good results though.
Would the club manage to attract 13,000 week in week out if they werent winning many games though? I cant see them getting much in the way of 'away' support for their home games.....

RL has had an established presence in perth for decades
they have a good junior base of players
they had a quite succesful local competition for decades which would see crowds of 10,000 or more for the grand final
they got a team in the arl which got great crowds
they were sacrificed as part of the peace talks for the game, betrayed by news ltd
a perth nrl club would be far stronger than the storm

| Been going since the early 50's.
Away fans? Since when has an NRL franchise rested on the ease of away fans getting there?icon_smile.gif
We had over 2000 members for our brief foray in the Jim Beam Cup, we are getting 13-15K for current games between two non Perth teams, we will top 15K avg imo in our first couple of years
You can't judge the potential by what happened in the SL era anymore than you can base the Gold Coasts or CC Bears on what happened in the past
WA adds a whole new live time slot option to TV
We have a population of close to 2mill and growing significantly every year
EVERY other pro Australian sport has a team based in Perth
We have one of highest spending capita per person in the world
Gallop loves us
We will be back if expansion happens in 2013

| For instance his failure to pull up the twit BM for a blatant lie - even when it directly affects his alleged team.

If the Perth Western Reds had been making shed loads of bucks and been seen as good money making investment they wouldnt have had the plug pulled on them.
Fact.
Thanks for coming though

| No ones saying they were making money, but then nobody was back then due to massive super inflated running costs due to the war. Being saddled with all travel expenses at a time when it cost $1500+ for a return trip to the East coast didn't help either. Reds were simply a quid pro quo for the cutting of some ARL loyal teams. News had no affinity to the Western Reds despite enticing them to jump ship and in fact pillaged the club to start up the Storm.

It was a political process. No wonder you didn't understand it.
