thomas is quoted as "it was the first time ive had a negative reaction from the crowds. a crowd started singing and im not going to lie and say it didnt hurt, but how sad are the people for doing that?".

is this acceptable behaviour? ian roberts was an openly gay player and it didnt seem to matter too much

like what a surprise. Not really acceptable in this day and age but I've heard chants on a persons weight (who ate all the pies amongst many others), disability (chants re Barrie Mc's eye), off field incidents (too numerous to mention) etc etc.

re Ian Roberts, Aussie crowds don't chant so not surprising. i do recollect NRL players responding to racial comments made about them though (big petro for one).

SO after all the stuff thrown at Gabby Logan by the chip on shoulder typical rugby league fans, she was indeed correct.

I'm not condoning what the Cas' supporters sung but had Thomas come out at the start of his Union career over a decade ago I've no doubt he'd have run out of fingers to count how many taunts he would have received.

It says more about society then the Castleford club. This was always going to happen as I pointed out in the discussion about it. Just as there are racists in this world there are homophobic people who are, lets face it, not terribly bright and easily led.

Racism has been at the forefront of unacceptability for a good while know so it doesn’t occur as much as it used to do (or as open) while the unacceptability of homophobia is still a relatively new thing, particularly in sport.

It will happen at other grounds too, every club has their idiots and it’s up to the decent supporters to either confront the culprits or point out them out to the stewards who can then pass them onto the police.

The theory that the people who shout the loudest are probably the ones who are unsure of their own sexuality holds a certain truth to it I think.

Gabby Logan made a remark to Scott Quinell that rugby league fans might aim homophobic chants at him, after pointing out he never received any of that from all his years playing rugby. There was mass outrage on here. Fans were boycotting the BBC, effigies of her were burnt, even a blow up doll with the name Gabby Logan was hung from the humber bridge. Your average chip on shoulder rugby league fan was emailing the bbc at this absolute outrage, when in fact, she was right.

Maybe he never received any in the rah rah because he wasn't out you dumb shy te.

To suggest rugby league fans have more of an issue with this than rah rahs is as feeble as your usual arguments, fish oil...

Playing versus spectating.

Every rugby fan and his dog knew he was gay. Just because it hadnt reached the national media and the M62, doesnt mean it wasnt common knowledge.

Yeah the chants "We suspect you are gay" would have really got to him...

there has been a fair amount of comment about racist comments at black players from opposing players so it seems that racist / homophobic stuff is out?

players were too scared of roberts to bag him, as garry jacks head found out at leichhardt oval one day when he baited roberts
