as this is the off season i was wondering if any of you had any thoughts regarding which rule changes or even any totally new ideas you would like to see introduced into our game to improve it?
i love this idea of matty johns'
www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-pre ... 7138679159
as wrestling is certainly stifling our game and is reducing the opportunities for any of the skillful players to get a bit more time on the ball to create things
i personally don't like how the australian national side in this seasons 4 nations persisted in taking out shaun johnson after he had put the ball down field, they also made sure that he was put to ground so that he couldn't run up field to then put his players onside
i hope this does not creep into our game
thoughts...........

| If you kick the ball dead, its a tap from where it was kicked, rather than on your own 20- would end the boring tactics of hoof it dead

| A mate recently suggested a one man limit in tackles so end the wrestling, lifting and twisting. Only one player to be allowed in contact with the ball carrier at any point as soon as contact is broken a second player can attempt to finish a tacke.
Ball steal allowed and an offside line of level with the ball.
Drastic I know but sounded interesting. I'm not so sure I could envisage what it would look like.
What would people see as the downsides/upsides?

| Let's have a rule that rule changes have to be made across the whole game so we don't have NRL rules, SLrules and international rules!
Can we also say that rules can only be changed, good or bad, every 4 years (World Cup cycle) so supporters and players can get used to them

Ideally, yes.
Rule tweaks:
1. 6 on bench. 6 interchanges. Once you are off, you are off for the game.
2. Tap re-starts to be controlled re-starts on the 40 not the 20
3. Drop goals 2 points.
4. Change 40/20 kicks to 50/20
Enforcement of current laws:
1. Additional defender flopping onto the tackle after tackle complete and called 'held' to be strictly penalised.
2. One touch judge to keep eye on kicker after the ball has gone to be ready to report late tackle.

What do we think?
I think there’s something in the idea about moving away from teams being built solely around having big men cart the ball up to get a “roll on”. RL will always have an element of this but I think it’s taken over in some ways. The attribute of endurance in front row forwards seems to have disappeared with giants who can play 20mins taking their place. I think maybe keeping players on the field longer by reducing the number of substitutions will encourage more gaps in defences. It would also put more onus on ball skills rather than sheer size.
As far as other ideas like allowing ball stealing, raking the ball at marker and contested scrums I think they’re going a bit too far but I like the idea of reducing subs. Scrums might look a bit pointless but I think that coaches could exploit the space they create for backs if they were a bit more imaginative. I’d be reluctant to make them contested again as they were a right mess before.

| Struggling with the links but -
I like the one mentioned above, whereby if the ball is kicked dead in goal, the restarting team have a choice between a tap on the 20 or a tap where it was kicked. Would stop an aimless hoof giving too much advantage and would see the game played more int he middle of the pitch.
Also - Held up over the line. Should result in a drop out and a new set, rather than the current go back 10, lose all momentum and play the ball. Would also encourage more running plays on the last tackle.
Charge downs. Genuine chargedowns should not result in the tackle count being reset. We'd see a lot more effort put into genuine kick pressure, the majority of which would be aimed at the ball, rather than the man kicking.

| The stories in the links cover a growing movement to try and get the game away from being dominated by a brand of rugby that relies on having a huge pack to take the ball up without any thought to offload or play creative attractive rugby. Apparently Roosters and Rabbitohs had amongst the lowest number of offloads in the NRL last year despite being top teams.
This movement believes that cutting the number of subs would mean behemoth forwards would either have to get fit enough to play longer spells or be replaced with smaller guys that have better endurance.

Definately agree with that one, I'd add that if a charge down is then recovered by the kicking team I'd then give them 1 more tackle.
Two I'd add;
Running to form a scrum with the only intention to get the ref to call time off, whoever forms the scrum to get time off has to then remain and form the scrum when the game restarts, if that happens to include the two wingers, scrum half and stand off then tough.
When a try is scored or a penalty given that leads to a kick at goal the game clock is automatically stopped, so time wasting by the kicker would be pointless.

| Knocking the ball dead when you have a foot over the line to be scrapped. Awful awful rule.

| Two changes.
1. Allow penalty advantage. Often a teams momentum is stopped as a result of being awarded a penalty, allows defence to reset.
2. In close matches, Ive seen teams deliberately slow the game and concede penalties in the last minute to run down the clock. Allow the team in possession to finish a set. Obviously carry on if a penalty is given which restarts the set
