Am I the only one who thinks Rugby is becoming a bit over the top when it comes to sponsorships. Obviously the clubs have to make money to keep the players, stadium etc but everything seems to be sponsored now.

It's surely going a little to far when the scoreboard has its own sponsor. What next the players sock tape is going to be sponsored? It wouldn't surprise me.

What does it matter? If someone wants to put money into the club, you don't refuse. How many people look at the scoreboard for the clock/score during the game?

I’m fully for sponsorships to be honest and I hope that one day their go a step further and start sponsoring the crowd. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could watch rugby league for free as long as we wear a top advertising the sponsor who paid for the entrance fee.

The more money the better. The more money in the game, The bigger the sport will become.

How would anyone feel if team names where subject to change to accommodate sponsorship? e.g., Wigan Safe Style UK - Shopmobility Scooter Saints. After all, it brings the money into the sport and that can only be a good thing, correct?

A step too far one might argue? The name of a team is "sacred" to the essence of the club? Once upon a time, I thought the name of a ground was sacred, and look how that turned out; GPW Recruitment Stadium, PROBIZ Coliseum, The Rapid Solicitors Stadium, etc.

The same principle for the club shirts, which are looking more like the middle pages of a local rag with each passing season - any free spaces available, why not stick another sponsor on it.

Of course, money is vital and central to the survival and expansion of the sport, but at what cost? As at best, it appears (to me) we're a cultivating a tacky sport without regard for dignity within it.
