Think this needs its own thread to work. I'll kick it off with his two Challenge Cup wins, at Wembley and Murrayfield with Leeds and Wigan but I'm sure we can add a lot more.

One generic one is the inevitability of Wigan making a break and him being in just the right place to back up through the centre. And if he didn't have a pace to finish it, bloody Radlinski would be on his shoulder to take the pass.

Best moment for Bradford was probably when he scored four tries in Les's last game at Odsal.

Feel free to add your own memories below.

It's a reality of team sports that some players who are very talented don't end up with the honours that some lesser players rack up, due to circumstances of the time and teams they play in, along with Lowes and Cunningham, Newton was definitely in the stand out hookers of the modern era.

One particular memory that came back to me earlier was of back in 2004(?) when GB beat the Aussies at Wigan, we were one score in front and our line was taking a battering from the Aussies, I can't remember who it was but one of their players got through and it looked a certain try only for Newton, for some reason almost back in the full back position, to haul him down, what was already a hyped up crowd went up another notch and, not long after at the other end, Senior scored the try to seal the win.

Newton read what had happened on that play to perfection. The fullback (can't remember whether it was Rads or Wello on that occasion) had made the previous tackle and was thus out of position fot the next play. Newton reacted perfectly to put himself into the fullback position, and was perfectly placed to make the followup tackle.

The commentator at the time accused him of "having a rest", but once they played it back a couple of times, they realised that he wasn't slacking, he was using his rugby brain to react to what was happening and be in the right place at the right time.

Great piece of work from a guy who gave his all on the field for his team for many years.

The cup win in 2002. The win over Saints in 2003 with a team of kids (Tez scored two tries).

I'll always remember this too.

Showed his love the club and I cried every tear with him.

For me, it was the 2006 win in Sydney. Every try, scored by a saints player he was first in to congratulate them with massive hugs, showing that his brain fart from the previous year, was just that, a brain fart. Then in the changing rooms afterwards, congratulating Sean Long.

Funny how someone has to die before people start praising them.

Not so long ago when Newton got busted for taking steroids or growth hormones or whatever it was you were all bagging the poor bloke senseless on these forums. If the Salem witch trials were a modern thing poor old Terry Newton would have been burnt at the stake.

Now he is dead he is on the same level as Mother Theresa in your eyes.

What is it with you Poms honestly?

Princess Diana was the biggest moll in the country before she died according to lots of people from what I remember...yet as soon as she died she was treated like a saint.

Ignoring the foot-stomp from an aussie (who would have thought, etc), there is a tribute to Terry Newton on the Leeds web site here rlhttps://www.therhinos.co.uk/news/14986.phprl.

To me that 1999 season was simply superb with him sharing the hooker role with Lee Jackson, with that interchange and the ever-so-predictable half time switch of Iestyn Harris from full back to anywhere else that he cared to roam (how many opposition teams fell for that one, every week icon_biggrin.gif ) we played like two different teams in both halves.

I think someone else summed it up perfectly - you only "hate" opposition players when they are a threat to your side.

No i only hate player's when they deliberatly go out to injure one of your player's i.e Sean Long who still today can't close his left eye ?
The rugby player was a thug who played dirty and had no respect with me?

AS a human being and family man nobody deserves to die in such tragic circumstances? RIP Terry

Yep, it's shocking that people might start discussing the career someone who has recently died isn't it?

Obviously talking about the highlights of his career means we are comparing him with Mother Theresa too? icon_rolleyes.gif

"Human being in fallible shocker!"

Like McLaren, I think the way he worked with Lee Jackson in the Leeds team of 99 showed that he was a talented, versatile player with a very good attitude (how easy would it have been for a young player to throw a strop when your club signs another player in your position?). It was a shame that we didn't see more of him at Leeds.

Away from Leeds, the defining image of his career has to be the tears at Old Trafford. In a sport that is often used as the very personification of masculinity and toughness, for a player to let his emotions out like that spoke volumes about his desire to succeed - a desire which ultimately cost him his career.

He was a player of immense skill and ability. Unfortunately he spoiled all that by being one of the worst thugs in the game and then compounded it by taking banned substances...so as a player, you'll forgive me if I dont sing his praises.

As a human being, I am very, very sad for his family and for him that he felt this was the only option left to him.
