Could there be financial problems at Salford?

Marwan Koukash's slim chances of owning an NRL club are dashed after reports more players and staff aren't getting paid at Salford. We revealed recently that Tony Puletua was out of pocket to the tune of almost 50,000 pounds and there are fresh claims from the Old Dart that some staff are on strike after not being paid. After the Nathan Tinkler debacle, the NRL is wary of handing clubs over to self-made millionaires with a penchant for horses.

BAILIFFS, UNPAID PLAYERS AND STAFF STRIKES AS KOUKASH CLUB IN TURMOIL
Salford Red Devils, taken over by Marwan Koukash in 2013, is in financial turmoil, the Salford Star understands, with visits by bailiffs, top players having difficulties getting paid and an `active proposal to strike off' the company at Companies House.
There are also reports of player Tony Puletua suing the club for around £50,000 he claims he is owed, and a strike at the club earlier this year by unpaid physios. Koukash has an outstanding £1.5million loan to pay back to Salford Council.

Salford Red Devils fans have been left shocked recently as top players have either left, or are planning to leave, the Super League rugby club that owner Marwan Koukash insists is "trying to build for a bright future".
Theo Fages, around who Koukash is trying to build this `bright future', has put in a transfer request. Lama Tasi left last month for St Helens; Kevin Locke is apparently on his way out, and Tony Puletua is now on loan at Hull KR amidst claims in the Sydney Herald that he is currently suing the Red Devils for £50,000 he is owed by the club.
Meanwhile, reports are rife on social media of one player having to sell his car to get money, others not having the rent paid on their houses and many star players having major difficulties getting money owed to them from the club. An informed source told the Salford Star that the rumours are `mostly true'.
Salford Star also understands that earlier in the season there was actually a strike by the club's physiotherapists to force the club to pay them over three months' wages that were due, and that, this week, bailiffs visited the club's headquarters looking to recover unpaid debts. Last September, Salford Red Devils were issued with a County Court Judgement by shirt suppliers, Kooga, for non-payment of bills (see previous Salford Star article – click here).
On the Companies House website today there is an `Active proposal to strike off' the company as annual returns, due by 20th February, have not been submitted.
The Salford Star asked Salford Red Devils to comment on all these allegations but, as yet, has received no response.
If reports of the perilous Salford Red Devils finances are accurate, it would leave huge question marks over the £1.5million loan that Marwan Koukash promised to repay to Salford City Council after he took over the club (see here), and the fate of the Salford Council/Peel Holdings owned AJ Bell Stadium, which has been mired in controversy since the £164,000 secret Council giveaway was exposed (see here).
Koukash has gone public today with plans to let fans in for free to next month's match against Catalan Dragons at the AJ Bell stadium. The impact of this on the club's finances and possible debts to the players remains to be seen.
On reading the rumours of the Red Devils' dealings with players on social media last night, Salford Reds fan and author Simon Williams, posted...
"As a fan of any club you put your trust in the owners, the chairman, the coach, the players and anyone who has anything to do with the club. You follow them with all your passion, and trust everything they say. In return they get your support which is lifelong. Some seasons ain't as good as other; sometimes you say `Never again, that's my last game' but you always turn up, season after season; you are the lifeblood of the club...
"Some chairmen need to remember this" he added "Some players play with passion , the passion you as a fan show on the ground, which is why you love your team and will always be there for them. Chairmen come and go but one thing is for sure, you as a fan will always be there even if your club has to start from the bottom. You are the heartbeat of the team. Never forget that. It is a pity some chairmen do..."

I rest my case about overseas, past their sell by date, pension seeking crocks taking money out the game at the expense of development etc.
I also hope the Mr Puletua gets everything he deserves as well as the physios and any other employee at Salford.

| Would this not constitute a breach of contract by the club if true and free the players up to leave?

The club yesterday brought their annual return at Companies House up to date. This isn't an uncommon or particularly serious oversight although it gives perhaps an indication of administrative disorganisation.

I take it to be that on Tuesday, he's going to sue everyone on RLFANS.com that have criticised Salford or Koukash. Can I just put on record that I love Salford, and have always liked the good Doctor.
Two world class props eh? Gallen will be one of those. I wonder who the other is?
I wonder how Leigh feel about Brierley and Armstrong being named as possible signings for next season? And all that about poor Theo? I imagine him being locked in a storage lockup on the grounds of the AJ Bell, waterboarded and not let out until he's signed a new 5 year deal and sworn allegiance to the cause.
Go on Marwan son, I'm behind you. It's a shame the rest of the RL family are not.

| In all fairness, he needs to come out and give his and the clubs side of events given what has been written over the last couple of weeks. It's imperative to settle the nerves of fans, sponsors, players and future recruitment targets.
Paul Gallen and Marty Taupau are the two "world class" props I believe he is referring to.

He does, but venting his frustrations in a press conference and giving the press easy soundbites to warp and manifest into something they are not isn't the way to go.
Those props would be a start on the field, I also heard you linked with Taylor, who the Titans are looking to flog. Two from those three would be an improvement.

| It's not going to end well at Salford. I wish it would, but if you look at the money guys behind the successful clubs - McManus, Lenagan, Caddick, Davy, Pearson, O'Connor etc, then you see guys who may well have strong views, and certainly do fight for their clubs' interests, but they're also professional, almost entirely behind the scenes, and in for the long haul.
Koukash is cut from different cloth, it seems. I fear that his self-promotion, short-termism, and lack of professionalism, remind me a lot more of the Bulls owner who took them into the abyss, than any of the blokes mentioned above.
Hope I'm wrong, but there's a horrible sense of an impending implosion approaching at Salford.

Yep. What's wrong with the man? He sounds like a teenager on steroids whilst getting drunk at an early 90's rave. He desperately needs to stop making everything so personal and all about him. Apart from being cringeworthy it just makes the club seem irrelevant.
Id be amazed if Salford are in with a realistic shout for 1 world class prop let alone 2 since there are very few available and even fewer who'd go to Salford.
And publicly naming Brierley & Armstrong isn't fair on those players or on Leigh and is thoroughly unprofessional.

Especially as they are likely to be playing against Salford in the Middle 8s. While I sometimes wish Mr Beaumont would stay quiet on certain matters, this time I hope the Leigh club come out strongly against this.

| What a pillock...
He might well have more money than god, but he is clearly unsuited for a public facing role in sport; he talks like a drunk bloke in a pub who thinks he's cock o' the walk, and seems to lurch from one unprofessional outburst to the next.
Embarrassing.

None of those you mention took over their respective clubs when they were at their nadir and having to take on huge debts.None of those you mention had to subsidise each and every home game.None of those you mention had the same stadium issues.
None of those you mention have been the magnet for disgraceful comment on social media, which would have driven lesser men well away from the family-friendly sport of rugby league.
I hope he isn't suffering from so much stress from all he has taken on that it impinges on his judgement to such a degree that Bobbie Goulding is really under consideration for any coaching position.

Do try and check your facts. Several owners have taken over clubs with substantial debts, likewise owners subsidise clubs - so in effect subsidise games. The number of owners with a variety of stadium issues are legion ! If you are unaware of these facts it may be because the owners get on with things maturely.
You are right that they are not social media 'magnets'. This is mainly because they have not spent too much time waffling on twitter.
I hope Dr K does challenge any potential libels ( I am amazed he has not shut down the latest Salford online article).
The reference to signing the lads from Leigh seems unprofessional and the suggested recruitment of Bobby G is an interesting judgement call.
