Just to clear up the momentum rule on forward passes here is a video to explain it
( it even has approval from admin to be linked).
It may have been shown before but it really illustrates how what appears to be a forward pass is not.

| I didn't think they gave forward passes in Rugby Union anyway?
I think most people understand that the ball will travel forwards when two players are running at speed, but when a player is stood still and throws a cut out ball (similar to the ones that Paul Cooke used to throw) that travels forward then the "momentum" rule can't be used.

| The youtube video was very interesting,it shows how the supposedly simple forward pass rule is more complex than it appears. The one where the passer throws the ball over his head is a good example ,everybody would say it couldn't possibly be a forward pass but the ball does go forwards after release.I still think that the video ref should be allowed to judge on forward passes ,as it is difficult to make an instant decision in many cases.

Leroy Cudjoe's out the back door pass against Saints a couple of years ago went forward in respect to the pitch.
They don't get any more backwards than an out the back door pass! So if people can't understand the need for this rule, they're basically asking for the game to be played at snail pace.

I agree. I think it's a silly reason why they don't. If it's inconclusive then benefit of the doubt, but there have been times when a clear forward pass has been made but the ref missed it. How is it the video ref can rule on knock ons/went backwards but not forward passes, which is the same thing but a player catches it?

Or massively backwards passes.

Isn't it because knock ons are judged in relation to the pitch whereas, as the video shows, forward passes are not.

While running if you pass a ball backwards and it hits the floor, relative to the pitch it's gone forward but relative to the player it hasn't, it's still play on.

The VR would struggle on forward pass rulings, purely because with limited numbers of cameras at each game, it would be nigh on impossible to judge accurately.
We have to accept certain things in life and the occasional forward pass is one of those things.
Sometimes the ref picks them up and on other occasions he doesnt, thats life.

If he can't judge accurately then benefit of the doubt. I don't see why we shouldn't allow him to call blatant ones that can be clearly seen by the video ref but he isn't allowed to act on.
I can't remember if Dobson american football pass against Hull on magic weekend went to the video ref or not. But that is something the video ref could have easily seen and called if he had the power.

No, according to the rules that would be a knock on. The guy you quoted and 'corrected' was actually right. A knock on is is given if the ball travels forward relative to the pitch.

Im not sure you are correct but I accept that may be an interpretation. Another problem with RL is the exact rules are disputed.
