EXPANSION is set to be officially removed from rugby league's discussion table until 2015 when the ARL Commission releases its strategic plan next week.

Expansion will not happen under the record $1.025bn broadcast rights deal which runs until the end of 2017, with the ARLC set to reveal the discussion will be moved off the agenda until 2015.

The strategic plan was seen as the second priority on the ARLC agenda when the eight commissioners moved into power last February and finally the game's vision for the future will be revealed at a press conference in Sydney on Monday.

Among the major issues stakeholders have been waiting to be clarified is the debate about potential expansion. Bid teams have tried to lobby their way into the NRL from Brisbane, Rockhampton, Ipswich, Perth, Wellington, Central Coast and Papua New Guinea.

They should start an "NRL Division 2". Then, from 2017 have automatic one-up, one-down promotion and relegation between that division and the current NRL.

This is what happens when the clubs take control of the game. They have no interest in expansion because they want to keep the TV money for themselves. What's good for the game as a whole is not important to them.

Hold your horses guys, nothing has been said except that the ARL will hold a press conference about expansion and their strategic plan.

Hah no.
Relegation is for poor holes that can't sustain proper leagues.

They need another team or even two in Brisbane, perhaps one on the Northside and one West around Ipswich,
Rockhampton, Perth, Sunshine Coast are the other obvious spots.
Get a 20 team league and play each other once alternating home and away each year, put time aside for SOO or Tests.
The way it is now where some teams play each other once and some teams twice is a joke and is always brushed under the Carpet never to be spoke about.

The Broncos are based on the northside

Quote: Lockyer4President! "The Broncos are based on the northside'"

The Broncos are based at Milton which is pretty well central Brisbane.
The North of the River terms used in Brisbane is a poor one, the River runs diagonally south west
I f you put a team at Ipswich and you already have the Titans on the GC which many southside Brisbane fans may follow anyway where else would you put a Brisbane team?
Should be at Boondall and share the Entertainment centres carpark.

No, Lang Park, the spiritual home of rugby league in Queensland, is in Milton and is close to the river and CBD. The Broncos play their home games there.

However the Broncos HQ, Leagues club and training facilities are at Red Hill, which is even further north.

The GC is completely separate to the Brisbane market. There are more Warriors supporters in Logan than Titans fans...

The NRL won't grow larger than 20 teams so SEQ will only get one more team out of those four spots. IMO the best place is the Western Corridor bid, which takes in Ipswich and much of Logan. It'd be nice if we could have Northside, Southside, Ipswich, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast teams but it won't happen... That's why we have the QLD Cup, for the traditional regional rivalries.

WEST COAST PIRATES NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_9857.jpg

The head of Brisbane Bombers’ bid to join the National Rugby League competition has called on the ARLC to give clear direction on where the next team will be based, even if they intend delaying expansion talks until 2015.

Craig Davison said he expected a clarification statement from the ARLC soon, which reports suggest will put off expansion until the 2017 or 2018 season with talks to begin in three years.

Seven bids are operating at different levels of intensity and Davison said the ARLC should narrow the focus to save unnecessary costs for bids he believes don’t stand a chance.

“I hope they come out immediately and at least give some direction to areas,” Davison told SBI on Friday. “It’s fanciful to think that any small town can get an expansion team. It needs to go to a metropolis, and Brisbane is the obvious choice.

“So do they make a statement now and say what areas expansion is going to be in or do they just let Central Coast and Central Queensland just keep spending money?

“I think it’s insane to have all these different bidding areas spending money when only one area seems to make sense from a commercial perspective.

“They should come out now and say if we expand when we expand it will be in this area and all the other guys pack your bags away.”

Davison said Brisbane was the obvious choice if the ARLC goes to one extra team, with Perth next in line after that. He said he accepted that further bids might come into Brisbane to challenge the Bombers but believed the bid had strong footholds.

“I’d expect various other teams to put their hands out,” he said. “But the clarification needs to be simply if they do it, where. They already must know what areas, they’re smart people, they’ve had some advice, and it’s obvious, when you talk to the Channel Nines, where a team is going to be. It’s going to be Brisbane.”

John Sackson, chief of the West Coast Pirates, told SBI: “We remain extremely optimistic that Perth will be the home of a sustainable and successful NRL franchise.”

Sackson said the bid had been prepared for the projected timetable.

“The writing was on the wall when the TV deal was announced and the broadcasters seemingly placed no additional value on an extra weekly game,” Sackson said. “But on a a positive note,we can now plan accordingly for the future. It has been very frustrating working with all the uncertainty and misleading speculation.

“I am assured that WA has been identified as a top priority development market and that extra focus, resources and supportive initiatives will be injected into the state to help the WARL continue to grow the game in what is an extremely fertile location for future expansion.”

He said the ARLC showed its commitment to the region by scheduling three NRL fixtures for Perth in 2013.

Sackson said the West Coast Pirates brand has been passionately embraced by stakeholders of the game, “based on impressive membership numbers, merchandise sales and positive social media activity, all of which have far outstripped the performance of our previous WA Reds brand.”

Ideal World (as in not realistic):

3 teams in Brisbane (Broncos = Nth, Bombers = Wests and just to annoy both of them Mustangs = Sth)

CQld Bulls

Wellington Maui

West Coast Pirates

When PNG becomes more developed :

PNG Angels come in

Adelaide Devils

Explanation of the name's :
Bombers have already been chosen, move them West of Brisbane to the RAAF are.
Mustang's are actually the South West Rep teams name (Sharkies actually took Penriths colours)
CQld is Aust's Beef Capital
Maui local legend
Pirates as above
Angels during WW2 PNG natives earnt the nickname Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels
Adelaide is known as the City of Churchs so for the Aussie humour

No. Maui is a legend across all the pacific Nations. The Current name of Orcas would do just fine or as I have suggested, a team based over 2 venues, Wellington and Christchurch with a name that describes "anti-jafa" icon_cool.gif

TBH, I reckon the NRL missed a trick here. WA should have been in now with the possibility of another new club in 3 years time. Let's hope all the good work done out west doesn't go to waste.

How many NRL games do you think you'll get this year? The NRL need to make sure that Perth becomes a regular venue for games...the appetitie is patently there.
