England international Gareth Widdop is one of six Melbourne players on the minimum wage of $55,000, according to Australian magazine Rugby League Week.
Widdop, 22, has featured more regularly in the Storm first team this season, having played three times last season. He made his England debut against France last year, and also featured in the end of season Four Nations.
55 000 Australian dollars = 35 732.5269 British pounds

Thats quite shocking for a Test RL player to be only on that much money.
Surely a SL club could offer him 100K a year and treble his earnings?

For the average man on the street yes its great to be on that much at 22 yrs old.
But compared to someone in another sport its peanuts. I would say most SL players are on more than 35 K.

[quote="The Reason":3e09qe5x]Hi Andy
The Rugby Football League are in the process of reviewing the video that you are referring to. We do not condone behaviour of this nature and have contacted the player’s employer, Hull F.C., who have confirmed that they are dealing with the incident under their club rules.

| They also get match payments ranging from 1-4k a game.
He's signed a new deal so next year he'll get w nice patties.

| I find it staggering that a sport dares to pay its players what they can afford – thank god we still have association football where a 22 year old can earn £100-200k a week as they should do

| You may all act like £35,000 is a lot(which it is) but as the OP said for a Test RL player it's very low and also added with the short careers alot of rugby players have.

| Simple really it's his rookie wage. Now he's showing his NRL class he'll either get a big upgrade or another good NRL deal elsewhere. With Storms well documented cap issues they couldn't really risk it previously.

I doubt Storm execs would consider a few barely average performances for England to be Test standard.
He has plenty of time in the next few years to bulk up his earnings anyhow, no rush

| Pretty average actually. £35k isn't that much these days.
There were rumours that full time young players were on £9k a year at some clubs a while ago. That is really bad, if true.

| My figures may be out of date, but unless I'm mistaken, £35k is getting on for twice the national average income in this country. That's not a bad wage for anyone. The problem we have is not that he's being paid peanuts - it's not peanuts - but that the obscene overpayments of a very small number of footballers, bankers and other greedy feckers have distorted people's understanding of what constitutes a reasonable salary.

32137_1302980312.jpg Fat blokes in the mud, flat caps, bogs that drain pi55 directly onto your boots - Now it's all 'Big Ask', 'Arm Wrestle', 'Collision' 'Contact' 'Facials' 'Upper Body Strength' 'Big Units' 'Scooting from Dummy Half' 'Energy Levels' 'Laying the Platform' ‘Middles’ and 'T-R-Y'. | Its surprising that if you consider a squad of say 28 with a 5-6 high earners in the 80-150k range, then even with a full 1.6M cap (if thats what it is these days), you have to have fair number of low earners.
Its all relative I know.
And you're right about wendy ball. I remember when I was a kid and footballers had sponsored cars with their names painted on the side, they made decent money but not the nonsense of today. It seems like a lifetime ago.

I wouldn't call the footballers getting paid the extortionate wages greedy - nobody in their right mind would turn down the cash if they were offered it. It's the system that's wrong, not those in the middle of it. I would blame the clubs and the agents before the players

39110_1363272058.jpg Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go
-
Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know

| Gutted for him, I really am.
I would love for Wigan to offer him 60k though! Been brought up in the NRL but wouldn't count as overseas... yes please!

| Based on the Super League Salary Cap then the average wage for any club spending up to the cap limit is of course £64k. As only a handful of clubs are spending the whole cap the average wage in SL will be much lower than that, maybe less than £50k.
These are still good salaries based on UK average incomes.
How much do you think some of the young up and coming stars in SL currently earn (until they come up for contract renewal)... less than £35k I bet!
