| Or at least build stronger links with this city?
The major issue that French Rugby League has is that most of it's clubs are based in small towns/villages with small populations, so small that they are really unable to think about Super League rugby or sustaining a professional set up within France itself.
I remember several year ago that Villenueve alongside Toulouse and Catalan were bidding to enter the Super League and Villenueve offered to rebrand themselves as an Aquitaine team covering the entire region, whether this would have worked or not I don't know but they were heading in the right direction.
Bordeaux is the largest city and capital of the Aquitaine region and has a large enough catchment area to sustain a professional sports team, should the Villeneuve organisation embrace this city more, playing home games their and gradually over time adopting the city as it's own? It would solve a lot of problems I think.

Well we may as well just pack it in and do nothing then.

| They appear to have Aquitaine in their name now. Its well over 100km between Villenueve-Sur-Lot and Bordeaux, not sure how it would work.

Should Salford rebrand themselves as Manchester?
Harlequins as London?
St Helens as Liverpool?
Castleford as Wakefield?

| Don't think it would work. As Leaf has said there is a huge distance between the two and the road network is not great. I live in Bergerac, in Aquitaine, and from what I can make out RU is very popular but although the French are aware of league they are not massively interested. Sadly there is a huge number of (mostly southern) Brits who do not know that rugby league exists.

| I think doing so would off the Bordeaux club more than a little bit

| Of course Villeneuve should move themselves 70 miles and change their name , then they could start a new club in Villeneuve and the club in Bordeux can fold because nobody is interested in it

| There shouldn't be any need to rebrand or move the club. Size of population has no bearing on success or size of supporter base. York is a decent sized city yet their RL team has no real history of success and their soccer club is now in the non-league after years in the lower reaches of the football league. Both Doncaster and Sheffield are larger than Featherstone but it is Fev that have the prouder history and have greater support.
Manchester Utd do not have the large following and success that they have due to cornering the support in that city. Many of their fans are from the south or overseas.
A degree of success on the pitch and a good profile is what makes a club become well supported Wigan (the town, not the MBC which includes Leigh and Atherton) is smaller than Bradford, York, Sheffield, London and probably a few other towns and cities with RL teams but the Wigan club has a history of success and a well known name. The success and profile helps draw support not only from the town of Wigan but from other areas of the country as well.
If Villeneuve are successful they will draw support from locals and people from futher afield just as well playing in and being called Villeneuve as they would if moved and renamed to be a city or regional club. A forced move may well alienate existing support (see Wimbledon/MK Dons in soccer) and kill the club anyway.
