| Not that I ever think this game would happen (or even think it should), but the thought of New Zealand vs Pacific Islands team had me thinking what an RLEF Europe team would look like and whether they could be competitive against England? Players like Bosc, Briers and Brough (who is apparently Scottish again, but is still from Europe so doesn't really matter!) are quality and could give some real direction to a team a team. France have some big forwards as well, and Wales some great young backs coming through.
Could they keep up with England?

| 3 people that have read the thread title and not the actual post. Well done.
It's more a "bit of fun"/"fantasy" team rather than an actual idea for a game.

| It'd never work because like with the stupid Roses games, they simply don't mean anything to the players. Playing for Lancashire for example, all the players, like me, go "Ooooh, eh? Isn't Lancashire up near Preston/Blackpool somewhere". Most of the players would go, "Europe, isn't that near Norwich?" If it doesn't mean anything to play for the team the concept is never going to take off.
For representative matches like this you need a reason to hate the other team and to feel pride towards your own.

Admittedly that helps, but you can overcome that providing you have people (players, fans, governing bodies) who are prepared to embrace new concepts and make them work for the good of the game. Besides, Yorkshire v Lancashire seem to have quite a decent rivalry in cricket.
The Aussies have made a success of origin, and the USA has done likewise with 'allstars' East v West games in basketball and ice-hockey.
Unfortunately when it comes to English rugby league, the answer always seems to be that it can't be done. No one is interested. Nothing will work. There is always someone trying to put obstacles in the way.
I would have expected to find RL fans on here chomping at the bit for an origin style game. You know, something, anything, where you can all turn up in your thousands and show the rest of the country what we're missing.

| i would rather see the much vaunted england v the rest that everyone is always going on about, an overseas select drawn from everbodies best overseas players against a full england team, I think that would be a much more competitive game with added interest for most superleague fans

| Why are people still talking about whether this match should happen or not?! It's not the point of the thread!

It fell down when you expected people to actually read the opening post

Never going to happen and shouldn't happen. There is no incentive to the England players (what do they get for winning?), there is no incentive for the overseas players (what do they get for winning and why should they risk injury by taking part?) and it doesn't help the England team as much as a Roses game.
The Roses concept could work IF:
- England selection is dependent on good performances in the Roses games (except for those not eligible for Yorks or Lancs like Clubb/LMS/Purdham etc)
- It is given several years to bed in properly
- It isn't a midweek game
- It isn't too expensive for fans

Hang on. How come there's no incentive for England, but there is for Yorks/Lancs? There is every incentive for England. They're playing a competitive team, so their places and international reputation or on the line. Something that wouldn't happen in a Roses game as their form wouldn't necessarily carry over in a different team under a different manager. Not to mention it isn't inclusive.

I thought the idea of the thread was to discuss the team and not the event?
