The way the Super League was being used on the BBC, Sky, Twitter and every news outlet as an acceptable version of the European Super League just shows how rubbish we are at protecting our game, let alone promote it.
We have let rugby union set up a Challenge Cup, we have let association football set up a Womens Super League, we have let netball set up a superleague. I genuinely think that this game is being badly run intentionally. Press coverage has been getting smaller year on year after the northern offices of the newspapers closed, and the Super League and the RFL seem quite happy for us to sail into the distance getting smaller and smaller each year til we disappear completely off, not the national consciousness, but even out of a regional one.
The Super League is a rugby league competition, one that we should be proud of. If we let our name be acceptable vernacular for another sport then we have to rebrand, and rebrand, at a point of weakness, and at a real low point in the sports history.
