| Quote Cross Hills Cougar="Cross Hills Cougar"The RFL will need to fully investigate the appalling conduct of the Fryston players at Featherstone yesterday. They should treat this as a once in a lifetime watershed moment and move to stop violence in RL for good. Yesterday at Featherstone there was a simmering undercurrent that Fryston were poised for a brawl. What eventually took place was ghastly. Probably what was even more grotesque was Fryston's on field team celebration after the hooter despite having lost and being knocked out of the cup. It was as if they were saying we planned to cause a brawl. and isolate one of their players. and beat him up. and we succeeded 100%. As "Him" often says, this feeling that violence is not far away holds back the grassroots growth of the game. It doesn't matter if kids first learn skills at a RU club. If they could try amateur league, many would love it and stay. Skills are needed and physical resilience and some toughness and that can be appealing. But for most the thought of Saturday night type pub brawl violence is not. At EVERY level of the game the RFL should introduce a long term zero tolerance policy NOW - anybody guilty of deliberate pre-meditated violence, mainly punching but also head butting, kicking etc should receive an automatic 12 month ban from the game. Only then will RL grow and be seen as a skilful, physically demanding but ultimately safe and enjoyable sport to play.'"
In addition, I should have said that the amateur game ethos/mentality of "One in, all in" has to be eliminated. All amateur teams need to know that, if any team is deemed to have adopted and used a 'one in, all in" policy during a match, then EVERY PLAYER in that team will be banned for 12 months.

| Until the RFL, BARLA and the various regional bodies get their act in gear, you've no chance of fundamental change.
Even the most basic of controls of the players who play for a team is a shambles. I could sign on for a team under any name I chose, there is no ID check, the only issue is I wouldn't be insured if I were to get injured whilst playing under a falsely. There are players out there, signed on under false names - again from my own team, one lad has played for 4 teams in the last 12 months (helping out mates at other teams when they've been short and we didn't have a game), whilst only legitimately signed on for 1.
Then depending on which league you're in, they use ID cards to check pre-game, but these checks are completed by a representative of eAch club (if done at all) and are paid little attention. Also, the cards are actually plastic wallets that can be cut open from the back and put anyone's photo in.
Starting right at the beginning, there needs to be a better vetting process of players actually signing on, ID cards should be mandatory, and should be hard plastic with photos embossed on them to prevent tampering, and it should be the referee who checks the cards against the team sheet. It's real basic stuff, but until you've got proper control over who actually is taking to the field of play, anything else is pointless.

| This is the moment to sort out the amateur game once and for all and eradicate the fighting etc mentality. If it needs every player to have a unique identifying number for control purposes then make it compulsory to have a passport and use that number. The growth or even grassroots survival of the game is at stake and needs must even if 'cost' might be an excuse given not to do this. Any better ideas?

| I know a few people who's kids play rugby union instead of league.
A few reasons why, they play at there own grounds with nice club houses, clean changing rooms and a bar that isn't full of local idiots.
These people would much rather have there kids play league than union but in my experience of my son playing from 8s to 16s I saw some horrendous incidents with kids all in brawls and parents encouraging this and even carrying it on after the final whistle.
League needs to try to attract middle class supporters because the etticate in union is far better than league.
We have a great sport but unfortunately the people in charge see it as there baby and don't listen to ideas from people who seem to have more idea than they do.

| A similar incident happened, oh about 20 years ago in the amateur rugby union game. Can't for the life of me remember the name but I'm sure they were based near Manchester and there was no messing around and no second chances. The club was kicked out of the league and the players involved were handed sine die bans

King James

I think this is very common. Just look at the amount of amateur union clubs, with full junior sections in West Yorkshire. Yet Yorkshire Carnegie struggle to get one man and his dog to attend their games.

i think you are wrong, just beacause of a few bad eggs clubs like Fryston, queens the old chequerfield club in pontefract, does not mean the whole amateur game is awash with violence. just in the Castleford area, there is Panthers, Loch lane Fev lions, Rockware. these clubs run junior setups right up to open age and have there own club house and facilities superior to most union clubs. the last i looked Fryston etr don't have any sort of junior set up. there just a team made up of cast offs and thugs from better local teams who don't want them, and some crap ex pros's who think there the local hard nuts.

So Steve Scott is looking at a minimum 16 game ban if he gets found guilty on those 2 charges. I have a feeling it’ll be nearer a year IMO.
