| Quote: BuckleyStreetWire "As the title says, I think the refs are talking too much during the games. They coach teams through the game (but inconsistently). And it's not only not needed (and unfair with the inconsistencies) but it's very annoying when watching on tele.
Joe Cobb is the worst, he shouts "okay" or "play on" after every pass...why? We know it's okay or play on otherwise you'd blow your bloody whistle! His voice is constantly there on tele games, you've got the commentators and the ref constantly talking. I sit there shaking my head it's so annoying.
They are always shouting "hold" or "wait" to the defensive line...why?don't do it, if they're running offside loving use your whistle and give a penalty!
They are always shouting things like "discipline" and "no penalties" to defenders like they're a coach...why?
They are always justifying why they aren't giving penalties; "no, he's trapped", "no, he's pushing forward"...why? Just ignore the moaning buggers it might stop them all whining for penalties all game (which is driving me mad at the moment)
And the worst one for me is that they selectively tell certain players that they're not square or offside to help them not give a penalty away but then they don't do this with everyone so there are glaring inconsistencies with that.
Shut the love up and concentrate on doing your job and not coaching teams and individual players through games.'"
I agree with you completely. I didn't even watch Leeds' game today when I saw it was Mr Bean reffing.
Can't stand Thaler either with his okay, okay, okay after almost every pass and every kick.

| Easy. Turn off the ref's microphone when the game is underway and then restore it when he's explaining a decision. It won't annoy anyone then.
As a former player I welcomed a vocal referee. Ones that are quiet end up having to blow up more as players are unaware they're in danger of infringing. I had more confidence in a ref that was able to make himself heard and kept the advice up as he went along.

| I disagree that the Move call can go, if we get rid of that, how will players know when to get off a tackled man? There's no set time, and it already varies depending on which ref.
Agree on the onside wait call though.
And my big thing at the minute is the markers square and moving off the mark. If there moving off the mark penalise them. If their not square penalise them. Wed have a much cleaner ruck for it. Instead of what we have now, which is a mess and constant short 10's as the ref compensates for letting the player move off the mark.

| Quote: bren2k "I share the view that refs are doing too much coaching during a game - some seem to favour an ongoing dialogue about ruck-speed, on-side etc, rather than just penalising infringements; and the new one is shouting out the reason they *haven't* given a penalty, such as "trapped" or "you're diving forward," which I guess is an inevitable consequence of the new fashion for certain players to constantly appeal for penalties - they feel pressured to justify themselves.
The real issue however, is the volume their microphones are set to for the broadcast audio; it would be interesting to hear them talk to players after penalties and incidents, but since the massive posse of people involved in commentary always talk over them anyway, it would probably work best if Sky just reduced the volume.'"
This!
Absolutely spot on, I am the point now where i really don't enjoy the coverage anymore but still watch out of loyalty to the sport i guess.
That and the play acting and wrestling is just slowly draining any enjoyment for the game.

Same as it always used to be, the ref calls held, or the tackle number and you then get off the tackled player before he penalises you, this whole hanging on and wrestling stuff is awful and it should be wiped out of the game, the responsibility then falls on the tacklers and defensive line to get set as best they can to avoid getting caught out.
