One of my faves was knocking the hands or arms of the dummy half from 1st marker (and them knocking on/fluffing pass) but refs seemed to deem this illegal around 2000 ish which I often asked which part of the laws of the game stated this if you're square when the ball is played.

I always thought striking at the ball at the PTB was too advantageous to the defending team

I'm pretty sure this is still legal as long as you are square and not on the goal line. Otherwise why bring in the rule last year that you couldn't do it on the goal line?

The quick tap when unmarked was OK, release the ball and tap and pickup - it was certainly still in the rules in the early 90s but died around the time super league happened. The ball now has to be played backwards, making the attempt to play the ball with the foot - in theory a roll backwards of 1mm and a pickup and run is OK but I can guarantee that no ref will see it that way.

Striking was also OK, as long as there were no hands on the ball. The time to get in an do this was very limited and if the attacking players hand was on the ball it was illegal and deemed interference.

Couple of things:

Striking for the ball - I hated this, plenty of times some fcker would scrape their studs down your hand when trying to do rake it back or to kick your hand when trying to welly the ball and force the acting half to knock on. Glad this went away.

Playing Ball to yourself - what puzzles me is when an attacker thinks the tackle has been completed, tries a quick PTB and then gets penalised for it - since I don't really understand what they have done wrong(in terms of rules infringement) since they've just placed the ball on the ground and rolled it back. Suppose it muddles up the game/tacklecount, and defenders may not attempt to tackle if within the 10m - but a clear "all onside, play-on" call from referee would make it obvious.

Re - Original question - yes players often tried the quick tap to themselves when close to the line, especially if they'd just been caught during a breakaway - I didn't really understand why they got rid of it - apart from trying to slow the PTB down.

Its a bit like the weird rule that an attacking player has to throw the ball in from the sideline, to their team-mate following a penalty touchfinder i.e. prior to the tap restart. The person taking the restart tap just use to get the ball from the touchjudge / ballboy in the "old days". Never understood this one - since effectively the attacking team "loses" a player for that set.

This site (albeit NRL focussed) outlines some of the rule changes:

Ah, the good old days, when craft and guile were the order of the day.
The 10 metre ruing changed the game irrevocably and turned the sport to a size and power game.

o doubt that the game is faster in the modern era but some of the art has definitely been lost.

It was always embarrassing to have the ball raked when trying to play the ball although, if we go further back (to unlimited tackles), raking the ball was one of the few ways of turning over possession and nobody would want to watch game of unlimited ptb.
