I went to one of the games, which were held between sides that couldn't make the finals in the last few rounds of the comp.
You really couldn't see much difference in the general play, but a lot of tries were scored because the defence was very stretched.
The good points are that less players in tackles (because the defence is spread thin) means less injuries. Any good attacking moves are generally rewarded with tries, and also, less players would be needed in squads, simply because you only need 15 fit players each week instead of 17.

I personally am happen with the balance of the game at the moment, with probably just minor tinkering required.
I don't want to see scores of 98 to 92 etc.
