I know there are some good things done at [isome[/i clubs and by the State of Mind campaign but I still think there's a lot more can be done. Otherwise I think it's just a matter of time before there's another tragic incident like Terry Newton.'"
Completely agree with this.
I'm going to make some sweeping generalisations here, so apologies in advance, but as a sport we have a number of factors that could contribute to another incident like Newtons;
- Young blokes who rely soley on professional sport as their only ever career option
- Young blokes who rely soley on professional sport and it's protocols as a form of personal discipline
- Young blokes who's entire lives revolve around their team environment and the associated fame/popularity
- A culture of misuse/abuse of prescription drugs (painkillers and subsequently sleepers) to enable them to take to the field and then recover
- Use of recreational drugs (And clubs helping to hide this)
Some clubs are much better at preparing their players for life away from the pitch and after sport, but the majority do little if anything.
